    Bias Lighting

I'm looking at getting a bias light for my theatre/family room after the holidy mayhem is over and my credit card has recovered from it's wounds...lol. Wondering what everyone else is using out there...? Fixtures from Home Depot with 6500k bulbs? Aftermarket ones from companies such as http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lume.htm? Any suggestions/reccomendations? What are you guys using to filter the light down to 10% of peak white output from your display? Can I go the cheap Home depot approach on this or would I be better off spending the extra $ ? (Is anything cheap in this damn hobby :?: !! :?: :? )

    aud19,

I tried this a few yrs ago. And though it does cut back on some eye strain, I just never got used to having it on. IMO, a completely dark room still yields the best results.

But in all fairness, I never made sure the bulb used was 6500k. The light was masked behind the tv . And seemed "almost" non-exisiting. I'd be interested to know how yours turns out.

Well I think the whole idea is based on the fact that you have to use a 6500k bulb to get the desired results. I'm going to try contacting a friend of mine in the lighting business in the new year and see if they can get me the same ballast/light as the Cinemaquest or something close in quality for a good price too. I'm even planning on going as far as painting the wall behind my TV the reccomended "18% LRV Kodak grey" (or at least the closest paint match I can get to it ) That's not scheduled till this coming summer though. The rest of the room will be either a sandy beige or taupe colour with white trim. All relatively neutral

I'll be sure to give on-going comments about the light and paint etc as I get it done. Hopefully after the painting I'll be building the cabinetry to hold all my gear...lol (I know... it's shameful but I've got all my nice gear sitting on top of boxes for now ops:  ) I'm fond of saying that the boxes are "vibration damping shelves"

Let's start with what I like to call "Lighting Scheme 1"

I will be purchasing a 6500K flourescent bias light to go behind my 51" Hitachi RPTV. It will either be a Cinema Quest Ideal Lume or I'm going to investigate how close to that quality a friend of mine in the lighting...

Well, I quitely added this TV to supplement my front projection since I saw real quickly that I was going to crank a lot of hours on my PJ in a hurry. It's an HDTV monitor, the following applies: (Extracted from Plasma Depot since it was actually better than Sony's writeup.) I won't address each feature...

        Stairway Lighting
        by PewterTA
        Alright...

So I've been looking at trying to illuminate the stairway down into the gameroom/HT room. The hallway upstairs has a light (about 8 to 10ft away from the stairs), but at the bottom of the stairs there is no "direct" lighting onto the stairs. Which makes the stairs...
