    Digital Video Essentials

Well all, I just saw DVE on pre-sale for the first time at the Widescreen Review magazine website. $89.95 for either 1080i or 720p in D-Theater Format. I also went to the Video Essentials website at http://videoessentials.com and poked around there. Their info is several months outdated, but indicates that they should have a DVD format available soon, which I guess would not really be true high-definition. We'll have to wait for "blue laser" methinks.
    :Z

One thing I found interesting is that they're not going to continue everything that was included in the original Video Essentials like the video montage. So there's a reason I should keep my current copy! :T

I'd like to hear what others know about the soon-coming DVE.

Hi, Chris, I don't know much about the new Digital VE, but I am anxious for info like you.

BTW, check in the Home Theater Builder Mag. thread. I had some comments on the new mag and your article.

Reviving an old thread here. Just got E-mail notification of Joe Kane's store (that makes DVE) selling DVE now. Funny thing is, it's been on pre-sale by all the other major media sales websites for quite some time. You can find it for $24.99 at:

The cool thing is, when you buy it from them they're offering a FREE plasma art DVD. Even if you aren't buying DVE, I highly encourage people to check out the plasma art DVD's. They'll even ship you a sampler for free. They have some cool stuff, from nature scenes to race cars to aquariums, even a "fireplace" DVD. The fireplace and aquarium DVD's you can show on your screen, and suddenly your display looks just like that. It's pretty darn cool to show off your system--I have several of them.

I personally pre-ordered DVE from Buy.com for $18.74, but didn't get the free plasma DVD.

The aquarium on Big Brother 4.... cool indeed. For a glimpse I thought it was a real aquarium but then quickly realized it was their in house monitor.

Just got DVE in the mail today! Woo hoo! Looks nice in the packaging with a nice little card insert. Also came with a separate thick paper card with imbedded red, blue, and green filter strips. (for use during color and saturation video tweaking) Much better than the cellophane pieces in the last video.

I'll post a thorough review when I go through the whole disc. Looks like it might take a while!

My NTSC DVD copy arrived today, as well. I had enough time to watch it in it's entirety..then balanced my loudspeakers..and adjusted the picture on the 60" RPTV. I will have to study the DVD a bit more closely before tweaking the Sony LCD Projector.

The DVD is much more thorough and informative than it's predesessor, Video Esstentials. This is a great tool for the inexpensive price of less than $19.00.

I'm waiting for this local store to get its shipment in. They've given me a list price of $20.99 Canadian. Seems a bit low but I hope that's correct (they even thought they'll have to double check that price once they quoted me over the phone). I'm also hoping that they include the DTS sampler discs that Home Theater or SGHT will include with theirs.

Would LOVE to know where you can get that for 20 CDN. A&B has it listed for 34.99 and Chapters.ca wants $39 for it. So if you can get it for 20 don't hesitate.

Well when I questioned the guy working there, I think he was also shocked to see their price listing for $20.99. I'm hoping it's true. Even if that was $US, that's still pretty cheap. One guy I talked to said he got it for $19 US when he was at a show just this past weekend in the U.S.A.

In case I forgot to mention, I got mine from Buy.com for $18.74. (US) This DVD can definitely be found at reasonable prices around the net. And like I posted above, if you get it from the supplier or Widescreen Review directly, you also get a free plasma art sampler. (nifty stuff)

It's $16.49 at DeepDiscount.com with free shipping. That's U.S. dollars, but makes me believe that good deals can be had.

                                  Hey guys,

So far I've seen it at two stores and the cheapest one was $34.99 CDN. The shop that said they may carry it for $20.99 still doesn't have any copies and are not sure when they'll receive them (hmm...sounds like they're not sure themselves if they're going to carry them). I don't know if I can wait much longer so I may just find a fairly cheap one on the net with free S&H like where Keith listed or just buy the cheaper of the two that I've seen.

You must have snapped up Deep Discount's last copy. When I tried to order from them, I got the message: "This item is currently not in stock and will ship as soon as it is available." No word on when it will be "available" again. So until it shows up there or elsewhere at a reasonable price, I guess I'll have to "make do" with the original (non"Digital") Video Essentials or Avia instead. :>) (Locally, Fry's has DVE in stock for $24.99, and at that price they can keep it.) :>)

Well, I ran this one last night to configure my plasma TV. Overall, great disc! Much improved from the first. Although it's not all-inclusive, and some beginners might get lost, it does have information ranging from the ultra-beginner level to quite advanced. More detailed information about grey scales and new technologies like 6.1 surround sound than the original disc.

Somewhat hard to navigate through the disc, though. They take advantage of DVD technology by using both "Titles" and "Menus", accessible through different buttons on your remote, which is something that many other DVD's don't do. Perhaps this is confusing just because it's not typical. I found the best way to navigate through the disc it just to press "enter" every time a segment ended and I got spit out back to a menu of some sort, as it automatically highlights the next usable item each time. (do NOT press play)

Many new and expanded test patterns for both audio and video, which are quite good. The disc comes with a card with red, green, and blue filters, which is quite handy and better than the individual plastic pieces in the original version, but the blue is SO dark that I had a hard time seeing the necessary test image on the screen in enough detail to make adjustments. A few new video montages to test your display and show off the capabilities. Quite nicely made. (they looked FANTASTIC on my plasma, output at 1080i over a DVI connection from a Bravo D1 player--very comparable to true high-def material!) The entire disc was actually shorter than I anticipated, only taking me maybe 2 hours to go through, including making system adjustments to both audio and video. My Sound Pressure Level Meter from Radio Shack came in quite handy again.

Overall, the disc is quite good, and good value for the low price. Consumer grade stuff. For experts, I'd like to see more, but you need to get up to the $400 point to get the professional grade Avia Pro that has also just been released.

Waahhhhh. My copy of DVE is STILL on back-order. I'd loaned my old VE out and haven't gotten it back, so AVIA is all I have at the moment, and it's not my favorite.
