If Dipoles are Pro-logic leftovers, then why do top name companies keep making them for DD playback?

As most of us know, the debate of mono vs di is as strong today as ever. Many will argue the "Full Range" on all channel aspect. However, most homes run "small" for many different reasons.

The speaker companies seem to know this. Thus, they continue to make/support the use of di-poles.

So why would they (speaker manufactures) continue to make a product, that would only degrade the sound, which in turn would hurt their sale?

I don't think dipoles degrade the sound.

Well, what we can't forget, is it's waht the individual/family likes that matters most. Di-poles provide a full soundstage. They don't sound quite as much like a box, as the sound is diffused. As long as they keep selling, manufacturers will keep making. Plus you have applications like side speakers in a 7 channel configuration where dipoles really fill in the soundstage nicely. Occasionally, I miss using mine as sides, but opted for the best timbre match by using all Sonus faber speakers. Even passed up some additional low end on the rears to accomplish this.

Since I upgraded to a 7 channel setup, I've been using dipoles on the sides and direct radiating on the back wall. I tried direct radiating on the sides at first, but the sound didn't seem as full. So this mix of direct radiating and dipoles seems to fit nicely in 6 or 7.1 setups.

There was a write up in one of the mag's about whats the best speakers to use for the various 6.1 formats and dipoles came out very favorable so I still think there's a niche for them. Personally I love the sound I get from my maggies but they are a little different then your average dipole

The best surround I recently heard was a B&K Reference 30 pushing surround to 4 M&K THX Tripoles. I've heard similar success resulting from dipoles at the 4 rear positions. But it's still a matter of personal preference.

              Hi there,

Continuing on my quest to learn more about dipoles and HT. A common recommendation is to use dipoles for HT in the surround channels especially back and sides. I've seen that all the commercial dipoles for HT are boxed designs with 2 sets of drivers shooting in opposite directions....

              HDCD via Prologic II?
              by lotones
Hello... I've been listening to music with Prologic II - through a RSP-1068 - quite q bit lately, and I was wondering if the HDCD circuit is still active when Prologic II is used. Sometimes it sounds like it is, and sometimes it doesn't. Anyone know for sure?

              Thanks...

              Passive-XO dipoles or semi-dipoles?
              by Landroval
              Hi,

I would like to find some nice options for dipoles or semi-dipoles with passive xo. I already know of Troels Acapella/Point75, some of TonyG's ob-midrange designs and some others. Are there other good choices, preferably not too expensive?

Volume gap between 10 and 11 when in prologic mode
              by Homma
I have a problem with linearity in center channel in my RSP-1066.
When I'm playing something in prologic and changing the volume between 10 and 11 there's a huge diffrent in volume for the center channel, the front's are fine. This doesn't occur when in stereo mode but whenever the DSP is activated...

              Dolby ProLogic - Bit Rate
              by David Meek
I'm finishing up my compilation of bit rates for my DVD's and have a question. Were/are all DVD's encoded in Dolby ProLogic, Dolby 2.0 and mono encoded at 192 BPS?

I know that the DD 5.1/6.1 is encoded at 384 or 448 BPS and DTS is encoded at 754 or 1509 BPS, but I'm not sure about the
