    18% gray!

Saturday I decided to paint the HT room a little darker shade of flat gray. Up to that point it was a light semi-gross gray.
I had read 18% gray was the correct shade to use...ok, it's only 18% how bad can it be?
Saturday I went to the photoshop and got the 18% gray light card that photographers use to set up their camera shots. I had the color custom mixed, and went home to get to work.
It took over 2 hours just to move all the stuff out of the HT room (1300+ pieces of software in alphabetical order)
Once I had painted one corner and it's ceiling area I realized I'd made a mistake in my thinking...this wasn't 18% from white...this is 18% from the BLACK end of the spectrum!!!
WOW this room is dark, but the picture does look better, and since the room is dedicated it doesn't matter...yeah, I can't wait to explain that to my wife when she returns from vacation.

    Hey Kenny,

That should be an interesting conversation about your HT room paint job...

But you know what they say in the military (you should!)- it's easier to ask forgiveness, than to ask permission.

Four days and counting til my two weeks vacation, no email, no voicemail, nada!

    Best regards,

    Jon

Yikes Kenny, all I can say is, don't put those brushes away yet, lol.

Jon, you can run but you can't hide.

Perhaps you made a mistake, but in the long run you are better off. I have my sides and back walls painted a neutral grey, which is actually a Benjamin Moore mix #1602 recommended by Joe Kane in one of his articles. This is one step up from a very, very dark grey ( almost black.) As for the front wall, it is a matt black and although the curtains and the screen take up most of the front wall now, what areas that do show are certainly non-reflective. My wife is not crazy about the decor, but it is a dedicated room after all.

Good story Kenny. I had an all black HT room for quite some time (before I moved). I really liked the results. My wife had something to say every time she passed through it. The good part was, it was a dedicated room so, there was no real harm for her.

Well Diane (my sweetie) called today, so we talked for about half an hour, then I casually mentioned that I just finish cleaning my roller and paint brush (gulp) She took the hint perfectly (one reason I married her) oh she said "you just repainted the HT room?"...why yes I did! And all the things in there really show off very nicely now!
Her response...how much darker is it???
I paused for a few seconds, thinking, how do I break this gently...I finally spoke up, "think black, then lighten it a shade or two"
            She's now prepared!

Heh ! Heh ! I'd like to be a fly on the wall the first time Kenny's wife walks into the HT room.

Sounds like you did an excellent job of preparing her, Kenny. If more of us were as astute, we'd all have less problems.
