Wire question???

Is it possible for wire to actually increase the DB output to the speaker?

I guess the question is compared to watt A wire can't increase the sound since it has no way of boosting the signal strenght but it might let more current pass through then the cable its replacing and therefor be louder. It doesn't really make the signal stronger rather its not restricting as much as the previous cable was doing.

Yes, if the wire is not of the diameter necessary to effectively carry all the signal properly, you "could" experience an increase in dynamics and soundstage, effectively increasing the volume.

Good answers above. One thing to watch out for: I purchased a cable in the past that actually added noise (hum) to my system (won't say whose). Bad solder joint. I would tend to suggest to stay away from cables with magic boxes and/or active circuitry.

So I'm not...okay I still maybe a little crazy but, as you guys stated it is possible for it to allow more signal flow thus becoming an actual db increase.

The reason I asked, when I replaced the monster xp with the heavier 12awg, I recorded a three db increase on the spl meter. And the sub has not changed location after changing wire nor has my seating position.

I was shocked and needed to get the feel of the board!

3db, that's suprising. At least in my eyes. That means only half the power was getting to the speaker. That's quite a bit of loss for a cable. Could it possibly have been a loose/dirty connection also? Was the length of the wire the same? I'm not saying your not getting a 3db increase I just wonder if it's all cable or if there's some other factor in the equation.

The original wire length was 7ft. When I hooked up the XP, I stripped away an inch on each end to eliminate any oxidation. The 12awg is a 15ft strip.

I thought it to be a substantial increase as well. That is why I post the question. It seemed a bit much...

The only thing that has changed is, the amp driving the sub as was the rest of the equipment, is located in the rack outside the L/R. Before all the A/V gear was between the two on two seperate tables. So, before there was three tables between the L/R and now there is just the one which supports the TV.

When I calibrate my system, I always kneel behind the loveseat and place the sound meter where my head is. Believe me when I tell you that, No one is more shocked than I! It just doesn't add up.
