Malay VCD's: Have You Tried Them??

I am intrigued by the VCD's, especially since the FAQ on the getvcd.com site says they will play on DVD players (I fugured only on pooters...wrong) I know they are not up to DVD quality..but I've heard they are better than VHS/ And at $6.99 to 8.99...makes me wanna try. Have any of you??

Susan, the picture quality varies. I've got a handfull of VCD's. Twins, Junior, a couple of Jackie Chan movies, and Phantom Menace.

The video quality is on par with VHS, sometimes worse as you can see the pixelation. If you've ever seen a video clip off a CD, that's basically the quality. In my limited experience, I have not seen any VCD that would be better than VHS. I am also talking about official VCDs. There are bootlegs available and the video quality on them is atro, atrot, freaking bad. Think of taking a video camera into a theater and filming the movie.

Now the audio. For the bootleg ones, they are crap. For the authorized ones, they are pretty good. I'm basing this on the Phantom Menace VCD that I have. The sound was great, but I've never bothered with the VHS version, so I can't really say. My friend has both and says the VCD is way better sonically. Picture quality is passable, there are a few scenes with lots of pixelation.

Finally, I think all VCDs are Pan and Scan.

    Hope this helps.

Hello - This is my first post on this forum.
I have a large (1,500) collection of VHS movies and, through my system, they sound very good. Therefore, I have no desire to switch to DVD (although, in time, I will get a DVD player for the same reason I finally got a CD player; the analogue formats...

Get this: I taped the HT show on HGTV the other night, and watched it last night. After I rewound the tape (before watching it), it started in the middle of a commercial break.
