Blade Runner to get an update

Nice surprise for Blade Runner fans... Wow, 24 years ago this came out.

CNN quote of article in case original article goes away.
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic "Blade Runner," one of the first movies to appear on DVD in 1997, is being restored and remastered for a brief reissue in September.

The DVD, featuring the 1992 "director's cut," will be deleted after four months, and replaced by a 25th-anniversary "final cut," which Warner Home Video is billing as Scott's "definitive new version" of the film. (Warner Home Video is a unit of Time Warner, as is CNN.)

After a limited theatrical release, the newly spruced-up "Runner" will be released in a multidisc special edition DVD that also will include the original theatrical cut, the expanded international theatrical cut and the 1992 director's cut.

Warner said specifics about the two DVD editions will be announced later.

The director's cut first came out on DVD before optimal formatting standards had been established, said Doug Pratt, editor of the DVD-LaserDisc Newsletter.

"Shortly afterwards, it went into moratorium. The early adopters who bought the title have long since wished to see it upgraded, while other fans, who came into DVDs later on, have been unable to find it at all. It is the only 'big' sci-fi spectacle currently unavailable on DVD," Pratt said.

"Runner" stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos and Daryl Hannah and won plaudits -- as well as two Oscar nominations -- for its dark, bleak vision of the future. Ford heads the cast as Rick Deckard, a futuristic cop -- the film is set in 2019 Los Angeles -- who needs to kill four errant human clones who hijack a spaceship back to Earth after escaping from exile in an off-world colony.

The film opened in theaters in summer 1982, and while it grossed only $26.2 million, it quickly became a cult classic. The film is based on the novel by late science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, whose prose also led to such films as "Total Recall," "Minority Report" and "Paycheck."

Now I would never question our great leader, but ( humbly) suggest that the thread may get more attention over at DVD Director.

As for the new release, well I've owned this on vhs, laserdisc and finally dvd ( the 1992 version ) and that's it for me. But I'm sure this is good news for many hardcore fans.

No problem George, we can copy it over there too, I just felt it was A/V news and decided to highlight it here first. Sorry George, please don't spank me.

          HD or Blue Ray? LOL.

There was an article in USA Today on this, too. Believe it or not, there will be one more release after this one! It'll be in 2007 and will contain all three versions of the film.

Ah, that was my question, whether it was going to be released to HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray.

So will this be the best, best, best, BEST edition of the film? Geez, how many versions do you have to make? Kind of like the New Old Coke thing.

Yeah, well all I have is two LD versions and one rather (IMO) indifferent DVD version. So, a true anamorphic release on DVD would be an improvement; much less an HD-DVD release! The latter will have me jumping up and down in the aisles, as the new audio should really do the Vangellis soundtrack justice.

Yep, that must be the same version I bought. Sure needs an anamorphic update to be "watchable". I think I'll wait for the Deluxe Definitive Collector's Special Limited Legacy SuperHighDef All-version Edition. Or whatever anyone gives me for Christmas. :>)

Funny, I would have thought we'd be doing good to gather one coherent thought between the two of you, let alone you having the same thought. lol.

Jon, I feel your pain. I've got over 350 hours of leave built up, and not sure when I can get off. We had one retire the 31st. We lost one last year due to transfer, replaced with a green rookie, and we are loosing another in August. Team is down to a shell of a team, and that isn't making things optimistic for requests for time off.

I feel worked down, to a nub, really, I feel like I need an extended vacation, like 30 days, 2 weeks anyway!

Not too dissimilar in my situation. One gal departed for Intel, my only other experienced guy has been covering for the departure of five people in Taiwan and Villach Austria, and I have a new hire who's quite experienced but has to be equipped and brought up to speed on our technology.

THEN, we're still battling (possibly successfully) to get the expansion req for personnel that was originally scheduled for 04/05 based on sales targets (which we met) to be fullfilled this fiscal year; it's still up in the air, and my boss has been tied up all week in discussions regarding that and related topics. He's new the job, and he turned a certain shade of white (or was it light green?) a few weeks ago when I pointed out that based on my vacation and holiday accural due to 21 years service, I should be taking 2 weeks of PTO per quarter, and not having been able to take any the first half of the year, should be doubling that the second half, which would be a month off every quarter.

I could tell you more, but then I'd have to shoot you, you know. Company secrets and all. It's a screwed up situation, and with the things we had to do to retain and hire personnel, my boss asked what I wanted to improve my situation comparably- I said just let me take off my earned vacation time in an appropriate manner.

I think he turned a little more green- I'm sure he'd rather just throw money at the problem. That's easier to get.

Both of you bring up good points about the overwork present in modern society. Ultimately, with a lack of skilled workers, we'll need to supplement our industries with an alternative source of labor. I think ultimately we'll turn to cloning and genetic engineering, since we can't make more time, we can at least make more (skilled) people. Imagine if we had say, a JonMarsh 2.0, skilled in those same techniques that could then take over for JonMarsh 1.0 while he is on vacation? Since having a duplicate person around forever would be... well... inconvenient, we could place a time limit on the replica... of say, one or two years. Then, everyone can have vacation time, and more!

Michael Keaton notwithstanding, cloning would not produce skilled workers. Or should I just chalk your post up to your sig line?

oh, on top of everything else from my perspective, I've been on priority projects now for 6 years running until last year, maybe 7-8 years. All you ever heard was defer vacations, or your put on a guilt trip for taking any time off. It started with Y2K in 99 I believe. Then I was on an SAP project. What a learning curve. Then I got flipped off that team to a team just venturing into special project territory. That was over 2 years ago.

Then we were in the tail end of this project. I said when is it just going to be about normal work? No priorities attached, just do your job daily and go home, and that's when we lost one because of personal differences with team lead, then 2 months ago we had 2 people announce retirement. So, now I get daily production jobs to watch, and I get good old night duty to watch special runs about at least a dozen times a year, if not more. No mention of comp time for that even. And yet, to mention a promotion would fall on deaf ears and a vacation, well... They can't even throw money at it like for Jon. I'd take that even.

I've watched as incompetent morons around me get promoted, some that can just barely speak english, and yet, my 18 years and senior position on the team is not enough to warrant promotion? PLLLLLLEASE.

But it's to late in the game to change teams. Think end of 3rd quarter.

Beware getting what you THINK you want...

I had that opportunity and the beginning of this year got a sort of promotion; my title did eventually change, the idea being that I'm still 75% and individual contributor and 25% management.

Well, with the organizational issues we have, retention and recuiting issues, new reqiurements for special teams with overseas HQ, it's more like a 75/75% split. And for relative peanuts. My manager's boss was upset because they gave me a 9% raise as part of the job and grade change; that was "too much".
Three quarters of the way into the fiscal year and we STILL havne't gotten the req for a second person doing my specialty (technically) to be hired for the US that was previously scheduled for the prior year based on sales/design wins targets, which we handlily exceeded. It's early Sunday morning and what am I doing? Catching up with more email, in the hopes I'll have a more productive Monday morning.

We had five people walk from Taiwan and European group in the division/specialty that I'm in in the last quarter, one in the US, and retaining the other took a very large increase. My reports are either at pay parity or make significantly more than I do at this time. My boss asked me what kind of an increase I wanted- I said no increase, just to be able to take my vacation time off on a normal ongoing basis.

Good points, Brandon. I do have a plan, and early stages have been impelmented this week- in my case, it's more one of disengaging from certain responsibilities even as I clean up an existing problem.

Your points are how I got a 25% raise for a guy who would have left our group that they'd been screwing around with. Had to take that up to the US executive board, but I made it stick.
