    dvd player which plays mp3-dvd's

    Hi,

Iam looking into buying a dvd player I doesn't have to be high or mid end but just one that does give good picture quality on a 42inch EDTV plasma and which plays cd's ok. I was thinking along the lines of Denon (low end models). My biggest concern is that is has to be able to play mp3 from DVD. Most play from cd but I didn't find one yet that plays from dvd. Since dvd can store much more it seems logic to make a player which can also play these. They website from denon says it plays mp3 from dvd but after reading the manual I doubt this. So does anyone know a dvd player in the $0-400 range who does this?
I already bougth a system without dvd player since all the minisets don't play mp3 from dvd, so I hope I can find a seperate dvd player which does other wise I might as well bought a reciever and player in one.

    Thanks for the input.

I think the Oppo 971 will do that.

Thanks for the tip, for the money it looks like a good player I only don't need the upscaling but ok maybe for the future. I read a couple reviews and they all point to a review in secrets in hometheater. I looked it up there but there is no mention of that player there, weird.

I emailed oppo with the question if it playes mp3 dvd's.

Any of the Pioneer universal players have a pretty decent picture and play SACD/DVD-A/Mp3... normally can be had for about 100-200.

If you want a really good DVD player the Denon DVD-2910 or 3910 is an excellent choice.

I was looking at the denon, but Iam not sure if they play mp3 from dvd. Since I have my music collection on mp3 (didn't want to bring all my cds from europe when I moved here) thats important to me.

I'd imagine all the DVD player would need to be able to do is read DVD-R or DVD-RW and have the capability to play MP3s. I doubt the MP3 playback ability is limited to CD-R.

If you won't be upscaling, the Oppo kinda has a reputation for not putting out a good picture over component. From my research into the matter, I found the Panasonic S77 to be as good an upscaling player, yet it still puts out a good picture over component, and it costs the same. Hope that helps some.

I already tested a view dvd players which plays dvd-r(w) and also plays mp3's but the combination didn't work yet. I think it doesn't read the file system on a dvd, while it does so with cd.
Also being from Europe its nice to have player which is region free and converts PAL to NTSC
Upscaling part I don't care about but the oppo outputs a 480p via HDMI, which my EDTV also accepts.
But I could still be temped to go for an more older 2nd hand denon which also has good cd play back and outputs 480p via component.
I did some research on the oppo and its a bit over hyped I think, also the cd loading times are still a bit long, something that irretates me with most DVD player.

If anyone else knows a good player which plays dvd-mp3 please let me know.

If I buy an upscaler dvd player like the oppo, could I also used it just to get the 480p without the scaler doing any upscaling?

Iam thinking between the pioneer 588 or the oppo. But first I want to try the pioneer out in a shop and see if it really plays dvd-mp3.

For the time being I first have to convince my girlfriend that and progressive player is really better then our old (still working great) dvd player. Well I think I want to be convinced also...

Hopefully the tv will arive monday...

                  Pana77 vs OPPO OP971H

Panasonic 77 CANNOT PLAY MP3's on DVD!!!!
                  But OPPO can handle it!
                  Let's see:
Oppo OP971H's features - reported by owners
Panasonic 77 features by Panasonic Global - Data sheet

So, if you want to have a bargain DVD player which can Mp3's on DVD
                  CHOOSE OPPO!
(MP3 ID tag support with latest firmware not supported YET)

Oh one more thing, the OPPO won't do anything but 480i over component, so if you don't need an upscaling player, and aren't planning on using DVI/HDMI, then I wouldn't go OPPO. (I do believe it is more feature rich and not a bunch of hype).

How does the oppo put out the 480p??? I read somewhere it wasn't that good in the 480p, but better in the 720p
I only need the 480p, I do have a HDMI input. But iam also looking for a HD cable box (or for in the future), could I use the component for the HD cable box?? (or doenst HD go via component??)

Kyle, what kind of tv do you use? any problems with underscan with the oppo? And how is the xbox at displaying dvd's? Could that be used as an dvd player?

I just need a player which outputs a good 480p signal (component&HDMI preferred but only HDMI wouldn't be the worst). And plays mp3-dvd and PAL discs. That isnt to much to ask of any dvd player you would think???

By the way my display is an 42 inch panasoninc edtv, does anyone know which imput is better (if there is a difference) the HDMI or component input?
I heard stories that the panny looks a bit better using the HDMI input.

Also is there much difference between quality video cables or local hardware store quality?
Can I use a normal cable for component or has it to be a special component type (like coaxial or something).

                        Thanks....

I thought the would put out 480p both on component and on DVI (convertable to HDMI)?

Its picture on component is not its strong suit though. I am using one to send upscaled 720p to a JVC HDILA TV through HDMI and it is quite good. I don't use it for music though, as I have a CD/SACD player for that.

I'm pretty positive it only outputs 480i over component. I am currently using it with my non-HD non-progressive JVC I'art tv, but I have a Sony Bravia LCD shipping tomorrow.

This review is one of the few that confirms it:

                            http://www.hometheaterspot.com/htsth...iew.php?rev=81

"About the only place it falls short in flexibility is that it will only output 480i over its component video outputs i.e.: no progressive scan output over component)."

I read the very same on AVSForum as well.

I've only watched a couple movies on it so far over 480i, but you can bet the second my Bravia comes I'tll be outputting in 720p

For me the 480p is most important. Iam now watching using the s-vhs connection since I dont have component cables and dont want to get them, just in case I decide to go with a hdmi player. With the oppo I have no flexibility, so Iam also considiring the pioneer 588A. Shame I cannot compare them side by side in a shop.
I like the oppo for what you can through at it..but I read that the 480p is not its greatest assest, unlike the 720p....
I read someone was using the 720p to output to an EDTV to get a better pic, but that would mean two more scaling options...

In the mean time iam still getting used to (the size of) my 42 inch plasma 8O (had an old 19inch tv before). 8-9 feet is the border line distance I think, which is my viewing distance, but need to get a dedicated stand.
I have to say normal cable (digital but still sd) looks not bad on it. I expected worse. But I want to get the clear picture I saw in the shop with dvd!!! s-vhs doesn't cut it.

Hi guys, here's one for the 1072 cd player owners.

With all the free music around these days, via downloads, or just burning some copies of a mates cd collection, the need to have a player that can play copied cds is becoming more and more desireable.

$500 1040 vs $150 dvd player, which plays a dvd-R? you will be surprised.

I have a Rotel 1040, I tried to play a recorded home movie on DVD-R (finalized) and it dosen't play, in fact, it can't read it. But to my surprise, it plays on a $150 dvd player. In fact, the DVD-R plays on all the dvd players in my home, except the Rotel, I think I will return it for a differnet one....
