    Waf

How many of us have wives that don't share our love for this hobby or can't tell the difference between your first system and the one you have now I've spend thousands of dollars on my system how can she not notice. This is frustrating but I guess I can't complain she lets me buy whatever I want
PS Also besides everyone here I don't have friends who share the love for this hobby all my friend think I'm crazy for spending as much as I do on my system (but there all blown away when they listen to it)does anyone else have this problem or is it just me Rich

Waf: very important factor! they don't care about any system, and think that it is a waste of money. I believe that more than 90% of poeple here have, are and will experience this.

My wife actually enjoys my hobby, she is not a nut about it as I am, but she enjoys it. In fact she has her own B&W HT system that she watches her programs on. She gets first pick on my old equipment when I upgrade my system.

lol, I remember you told me that she has no ideas how much you've paid for cables or other things, Rick.

I got lucky, I've assimulated her into the audio world.

I know exactly what your talking about. When I decide it's time to buy an expesive piece of equipment I just go buy it without telling her and then deal with any consequences that may arise afterword. ops:

My wife tolerates my passion for music and equipment. When we met, I was a mobile DJ in addition to being her next-door neighbor so she knew that I came with "baggage." She is a music lover herself but prefers to listen to a portable CD player with headphones. Likewise, she enjoys watching movies with surround and will turn on the HT system to take in a flick but that is where her interest ends. I too have no friends that share any serious interest in the hobby. I did have one old friend from high school who had some interest in audio but he and his family moved to another state a couple years ago.

There's a saying it's better to ask for forgiveness.

While my wife doesn't share the same enthusiasm, she does enjoy HDTV

"That's like saying it's better to ask for forgiveness."

Or as a former supervisor used to say:

"It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission."

My wife knows how much music and movies mean to me so she lets me splurge once in a while. Friends that are not into the hobby cannot understand why someone would spend lots of cash for audio equipment. It's an addiction I guess.

I think you may have nailed it on the head.IT is an Addiction.Probaly why we have to sneak it in without anyone noticing until it's too late. And when they do you just tell them "OH! i got that a while ago".

Indeed, I use to wait until the wife left town on travel and make my purchases, half the time she wouldn't notice for several months, if I was clever enough.

But alas, I told her that I would be honest henceforth, and will tell her when I purchase anything new over $200.00. Not much available at that price, maybe a BFD, hmmmm.

                          Regards,

                          Azeke

My girlfriend and I do not share finances, but she and I enjoy my home theater on a weekly basis when we watch movies together. She also purchased a few DVD-A discs that she wanted to listen to with my system.

She is an attorney and has much more disposable income than me, so I was impressed and excited when she told me a couple months ago that she wanted to buy a nice stereo system and would like my help in picking out speakers and equipment.

My last ex-GF was also a geek like me. She was somewhat interested in it and did enjoy the results. The previous one was not and she couldn't have cared less as long as it played music when she wanted it to. Give me a geek any day... except that one probably never again.

I think the trick is to come with it as your passion vs. golf or cars or something else. Then when you get complaints, you say, "Hey, it's not like golf or cars where you don't get to share in the enjoyment."

Just be glad you married guys have wives that will let you have audio equipment at all. I know married guys that have wives that wouldn't let them put even a bookshelf speaker in their den to save their lives. For those guys WAF doesn't stand for "wife acceptance factor", it stands for "wife ANGER factor".

Like Glen's wife, mine tolerates my passion for all things HT and music. Since my HT is a dedicated room, the fact I have black and grey walls and no windows doesn't bother her . As for all the equipment and upgrades over the years, well it never bothered her because everytime I got something, she got something, too. It wasn't that way in the beginning, but the bigger my paycheque got, the more allowance we both shared. If you can afford it, that's the way to go in the long haul.

There ya go... just stake a claim on one room that's exclusively yours... where the decor revolves around the audio gear and not the other way around.

My stuff is all in the basement. My wife, who has no interest in any of this, doesn't care about how it looks, which is good. My DIY sub sounds great, but I am no cabinet finisher.

for me its all about compromises. she puts up with my audio addiction and fanatiscism (honey honey, cant you hear that little cymbal crash at exactly 2:53 into song XX??? we only hear that now because I just spent $1200 on these awesome new speaker cables....)

i put up with some of the nutty things she's into like arts and crafts. so I make sure she recognizes that every once in a while when I have the craving to upgrade an amp or speaker.

I was given the basement man-room & the garage. I put a brewery in the basement and I 'let' my wife park her car in the man-room annex. Haha, as for money, if you ask my wife - everything I bought was used & under $100! It all looks the same to her.

My girlfriend sings and plays several instruments. Her whole family is very musical. She even had a car stereo installed before we met... now she wants me to help her add a sub to the car and a music server and system to her house! She is very supportive of any changes I make to my HT... I think she looks forward to the improvements as much as I do whenever we fire up a movie or a new CD. She's been watching every step of my DIY subwoofer project and keeps thinking of movies for us to watch once they are done! I hope they turn out well...

The middle daughter plays guitar too and I'm hoping she'll be able to teach me. I'm on the watch for a good starter acoustic guitar to learn on. :T

She uses the equipment to prepare for work/making choreographies(so she is not exactly sitting in the middle when listening :P ), but sometimes that can be a downside; most of the equipment she uses at work, do not convey the details that my system does, so sometimes a choreography won't work as nice as she had expected.

Our house doesn't accommodate for a man cave(except for reading audio magazines on the toilet :B ) so we both had to get used to the 7.1 lay out in the living room. But apart from the usual difficulties (explaining why you have to have that piece of equipment, providing "tech service" (really had to laugh at that one) ), I really don't have a reason to complain. She even refused to watch movies on t.v. while my beamer was away for repair.

My wife knows what a directly heated triode is.
She can passably explain class a and a/b amplifier topology.
For the last few months she has been helping me build a new set of speakers. We are combining the HTGuides GrahamT Extremis project with the JonMarsh extreme optimized M8a-MK-x type cabinet with some of our own spin put on it.
She thinks these speakers will be too small.
When time and money permit, she wants a crt projector that can do 1080p.
She can explain progressive and interlaced imaging and knows what an aspect ratio is.

                                                                                    I could probably go on....

What can I say, I love my wife.

I just sold my 601s/ASW 500 because: a) a buddy offered to pay my cost for them; 2) a lack of WAF on the looks of the 601s, and 3) wife's fears over my toddler...
