    DVI Vs Composite

My new HD DVR Box came with an incredable set of heavy duty RCA composite cables, completly shielded and gold tipped...my question is will I gain much of an improvement if I go to a DVI cable instead?

I assume you meant component video cables (the 3 RCAs), not composite (1 RCA, which won't do HDTV).

It depends on your gear which will look better. What are you using for a display? If you have a digital (LCD, DLP, DILA, plasma, etc.) display, in theory the DVI should look better because you are getting a direct digital feed from your HD box to the digital panels in your display, with no digital-to-analog-and-back-to-digital conversions which can lead to signal degradation. DVI should in theory look better, but you should try both to see which works better with your equipment.

If your display is analog (CRT), then it's even more dependent on your gear. Depending on the quality of the DACs in your TV vs. your HD box, component may look better, or DVI may look better. Once again, try both and see.

One last tidbit, if/when HDCP starts being used, you may have to use DVI or HDMI to view protected HD material, as the component outputs will either be disabled or downrezzed to 480i or 480p.

Kevin is right on. I just finished with a basement remodel and part of that was running cables from the cabinet to the ceiling where the Projector is. I ran both HDMI and Component cables. Last night I got the PJ installed (Panny AE700U) and began playing with it a bit. I swapped between my DVD and HD cable box both through Component and HDMI just to ooh and ahh at the big picture. Honestly, not much--if at all-- difference. I would change a setting here and there and one would look better than the other, then change something else and it would change again.
When I actually sit down (OK no couch in basement yet  ) and properly calibrate the PJ, maybe the HDMI will win, but I wouldn't bet by much.

If you are happy with the Component picture, save some cash as that DVI cable will set you back a few bucks...they aren't cheap!

I went with a good set of component cables because when HD-DVD/Blu Ray Hits, I'll need the HDMI/DVI connection for that since everything I've seen says that you won't be able to see the 1080P video w/o HDMI/DVI.

I'm using a Motorola 6412 with component cables.

            Got the DVI cable

I went out today and bought a good quality DVI cable today...in the area I live in we have a smaller cable company called Cable America...they have always given me the greatest support...I have the direct line to the head tech and he has been really helpful with all my set-ups. Anyway the DVI made a huge difference over the componant cables...with both I did get 1080i but the DVI is so much cleaner, and with the optical audio the cables are kept to a minimum. I used the heavy duty componants that came with the HD box on my AV receiver, so now it is improved too.

DVI,Component,Composite, is that the order from best to worst?.I was told that unless you were watching in HD that DVI doesn't make that much difference. Then component is the way to go? Well on the 4805 for instance you can go with component hookup but running it from my PC I only have one component...
