    Anyone here use VOOM?

I have DishNet now and the few HD channels I do have are fairly good. From what I hear VOOM has much more HD content. Since I just recently signed up for a year of Dish I cannot just drop it and go with VOOM. I wonder if it might be worth it just to add VOOM or would it be redundant. Thanx for any help.

Hey there. I had the VOOM service installed about a month ago. Yes, they do have many more HD channels...but they're not worth watching. I'm not a big TV watcher but I don't need channels like, "Guy Tv", "Spy TV", "World Sports", etc. Lots of highly specific programming that you've never heard of. The service and picture quality are great, no complaints there. One serious drawback- no Fox Sports channels. I'm missing alot of Dallas Mavericks games because Fox Sports Southwest is not currently available on VOOM. They do say that the number of channels will be going up during this year, though.

I thought Voom was bought out and continuation of the service is in doubt?

They've made a lot of promises for a long time it seems that haven't come true.

Lex, I didn't know anything about that. Where should I look to get the info you have on VOOM? I don't like dealing with companies that offer lots of empty promises.

Currently Dish is trying to buy Voom. The proposed acquisition still has to be approved by FCC which could take a year or more. I believe this is Dish Networks way of competing with DirecTv in the high def channel market since DirecTv is launching two satellites this year and adding fifteen HD channels.

LOS ANGELES, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Cablevision Systems Corp (CVC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it will close down its VOOM business after failing to reach a deal for VOOM HD LLC to buy the business, assets and liabilities of Cablevision's Rainbow DBS satellite business.

But VOOM HD LLC said it was prepared to finance the continued expansion of the VOOM satellite service. Supported by the family interests of Charles and Thomas Dolan, VOOM HD, LLC has advised Cablevision it continues to be interested in completing a transaction on the terms and conditions of the letter of intent into which the two companies entered several weeks ago.

The letter of intent between Cablevision and VOOM to pursue such a deal expired Monday. Rainbow was not included in Cablevision's deal to sell some satellite assets to EchoStar Communications Corp (DISH.O: Quote, Profile, Research) . Cablevision plans to provide the VOOM service for a transition period of a minimum of 30 days, and is also encouraging employees whose jobs would be affected by the closure of VOOM to pursue other jobs at the company.

http://www.voom.com Voom has ceased taking new customer orders and will shut down by the end of March.

But it appears they may be building another site http://www.voomllc.com/

In yet another twist in the ongoing soap opera at Cablevision, Chairman Charles Dolan announced late Wednesday night that holders of a majority of the company's Class B common stock elected Rand Araskog, Frank J. Biondi, Jr., John Malone and Leonard Tow to Cablevision's board of directors.

Charles Dolan said the new directors will replace William J. Bell and Sheila Mahony, both of whom recently retired as officers of Cablevision, as well as Steven Rattner and the late John Tatta. The new directors are expected to serve until the next annual meeting of stockholders, scheduled for May 19, and then to be re-nominated for an additional term.

Dolan also said in his statement that the board will be asked at its next meeting on March 7 to increase its size so Class B stockholders can elect Brian Sweeney to fill a new board seat. Sweeney has been with Cablevision for 12 years and is a senior vice president for e-media. He is a son-in-law of Dolan.

Dolan also said he has notified Cablevision that Class B stockholders will exercise their rights under Cablevision's certificate of incorporation to nominate and elect 75 percent of the company's directors at the next annual meeting of stockholders, set for March 7.

What the new board members mean for Cablevision and its plans to shut down VOOM, its struggling satellite TV service, was unknown late Wednesday night. Charles Dolan wants to keep VOOM running. But it's believed that his son, Cablevision CEO James Dolan, is part of the contingent that wants to shut down the operation.

Some of the new board members are well known in cable and satellite circles. Cable industry veteran Malone is chairman of Liberty Media, and Biondi is a former president and CEO at Viacom, former chairman and CEO of Universal Studios, and former chairman and CEO at HBO.

            From http://www.skyreport.com

No doubt it's a huge fat soap opera right now... but it doesn't look like Dish will take the Rainbow portion of Cablevision. Father vs. son fight on whether to keep it going or shut it down. It's anyone's guess as to what will happen.

I still have three of there receivers, six remotes, and a dish at my house. Three times they scheduled techs to come pick up the stuff but no one ever showed.

Voom HD programming... SUX! You get just as much with Directv or Dish as far as quality of programming and for a lot less money... unless you like crap TV and a vast amount of repeats each and every day. They have about two shows rotating throughout the month on some channels. Tons of promises and minimal follow throughs.

Voom is really makin' some noise in the satellite world. Especially in the HD area as they are now up to 37 HD channels (21 of those exclusive to VOOM) and have more on the way in June.

We've posted a little on this in the past but they haven't had much offering up until recently....
