    Equipment murdered by beverage

Just got home from a party (yeah, I know... see the HT addict thread).

Anyway, the receiver was killed by a spilled drink. No, someone didn't trip or put the plastic cup on top. The situation was preventable by the host. Thank goodness some other guests had brought their tambor drums.

Anyway, the amp had a little shelf above it where the CD's were put and someone had put their drink on the end where there was just enough room. Bump went a dancing guest and the sound of silence! Normally a shelf will shed the liquid, but this is one of those Ikea shelves with 3 wooden slats and gaps. Right into the top vents.

If that amp had been put on the shelf, this would not have been the night the music died.

And with Halloween coming up, here's my own advice for keeping drinks off your speakers:

Put a layer of plastic or foil on top and a little tent card that says how much each one costs. When that figure is more than most people's whole systems, you will spend all your time explaining. But talking about your obsession is way more fun than dealing with a shorted amp or a soaked driver. And in my case, the little note says that the amp is on the back and a spilled drink may actually electrocute the offender. So far, I've only had to remove one drink and when that person found out what an active monitor is, they were shocked that they could have been shocked.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I keep a really cheap 5-disc changer with an adjustable output just for parties, and ensure the rest of the system is really, really hard to access. That way, nobody ever touches the mixing board.

I used to think I was overly obsessive, but tonight I've seen why it's better to play it safe.

    ensen.

I heard through the grapevine today that the receiver is actually working again. Apparently it needed to dry out. I'm not sure I believe that the unit is 100%... are the protection circuits really that good?

Well, the proof is in the performance. With it being a solid-state unit, if it works then I'd think it would work 100%. That is, unless it got into some physically moving part like the volume control or channel selector (some type of turning knob). If not, then the owner may have just dodged a big bullet.

I make sure all of my guests know that they may only use 80's hair metal band CD's as a resting place for their beverage of choice.

The first suggestion may lead to heat failure of the components and the second might lead to heart failure of the guests. :>)

Would that reduce the charge from murder to "assault and splattery"? :B

I meant the speakers, not the amp.

i have a fool-proof way to make sure no one ever puts a drink on your speakers...

not only are they 6' tall (too tall to set a drink on top, its just not convenient), but they are only 1" thick

                        btw, they sound superb too.

If the speaks have real wood exteriors, putting plastic on them will damage the finish for sure. If may take a while but it will happen.

That's the beauty of my B&W 804's, try putting your drink on that
Also, if you have one of those older Krell KSA amps, if one of your guests puts a drink on it, then goes to the bathroom, and has a sip 10 minutes later he'll be in for a nice surprise and a visit to the emergency room for a burnt asophagus
