    Blood Work - A Review

    Bloodwork - A Review 08/26/2002

This is the latest film from Clint Eastwood, in which he stars, directs and produces. It concerns Terry McCaleb, a convalescing retired FBI profiler that is brought out of retirement to catch the person that murdered the woman whose heart he received in a transplant. Jeff Daniels also stars as Buddy, the local marina's loafer and McCaleb's friend. Wanda De Jesus is Graciella Rivers, the sister of the murdered heart donor and the woman that badgers McCaleb into finding her sister's killer. Anjelica Huston has a few scenes as Mccaleb's heart surgeon.

This is NOT a Dirty Harry flick. If anything it's anti-Dirty Harry - the movie opens with Clint pursuing a killer and having a heart attack in the process. Now we all know that Harry wouldn't have let a little thing like that slow HIM down! Clint plays the role with his usual minimalist style. When Rivers (De Jesus) approaches McCaleb who is only 60 days out of surgery and living on his boat, he resists being drawn out of retirement as he is fairly happy and content. Her protestations grow more heated until he gives in. Ms. De Jesus, while very easy on the eyes, really overacts quite a bit in her role which wound up distracting from the overall feel of pace and the steady rhythm the film moves in. Jeff Daniels adds a good bit of easygoing comic relief as McCaleb's sometimes driver and escort.

Visually and audio-wise nothing in this film really stands out above average, and nothing really falls far below except the afore-mentioned breakdown in Ms. Rivers' acting. It's all basic solid stuff that doesn't get in the way of the story.

That's too bad because the storyline needs a little something. The story in itself moves along almost sedately with a few peaks of action to keep your attention. Again nothing really distinguishes itself in this film. Hmmm, I'm repeating myself. Overall, it was worth a matinee viewing only. I really can't say I recommend this as a full-price ticket. If you don't catch it in the theater, then once it's released on DVD, I recommend a rental viewing before you purchase.

I give Blood Work :25: out of :5:

I'm a sucker for Clint's work. Really didn't like TRUE CRIME but it's in my collection. Blood Work will likely be there, too.

I like Clint a lot! The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of my 10 all time favorite movies. This one just didn't get under my skin like most of his other work.

I do hope I'm in as good a condition at 72 as he is.

I'm 66 and I wish I was in his condition

Ditto on OUTLAW JOSEY WALES. Right up there with best westerns of all time.

A Hero's Tribute of stirring heart and soul
          by Doug
The days since September 11 have yielded many emotions among not only American people, but much of the world. It was very comforting to see our Brothers and Sisters of the World unite in sympathy, in mourning, giving our Hero's that died in New York and Washington, a Hero's tribute.

          Tonight,...

It's been many months since I'd first seen this movie and in that time, I'd forgotten how much I like this film. I pulled it out tonight and got re-acquianted. It's a nice, dark, eerie tale with Jean Reno (Leon, Godzilla, Ronin et al) as a French police commissioner on the trail of a serial killer in...

MYSTIC RIVER... another Oscar for Clint
          by George Bellefontaine
Clint Eastwood is getting a lot of good airtime on his direction of this film, and Sean Penn's acting is getting similar hype. Haven't seen the film as yet, but I got a feeling this will be a collector's item as far as dvd goes.

On a side note, during an interview, Eastwood was asked...

Just like watching a Cary Grant or John Wayne movie, watching a movie with Clint Eastwood in it rarely gives us a surprise. It does, however, rarely disappoint. Nothing fancy or revolutionary about Trouble with the Curve. Just a couple of hours in the company of a old favourite (and a fine Amy Adams...

For the record, I must say that I am a huge fan of Concert videos!!. Got the DVD of Peter Gabriel's "New Blood" concert for Christmas and I must say, it's quite an impressive concert !!. He basically sings his songs with a full Orchestra. There are no guitars or bass guitars. For those that...
