Since this post isn't related to displays, I'm going to move it to the Home Theater area. (Oops, someone else moved it already while I was posting this... the mods here are quick!)

What receiver or processor do you have? And what source are you trying to get surround from?

If you have a digital cable box or digital satellite box, most of these provide a digital output that you can connect to your receiver or processor, just like your DVD player. Some channels, particularly movie channels, offer Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

If you have a newer unit with Dolby ProLogic II (DPL II), or better yet DPL IIx, these do a pretty good job of adding surround to 2-channel sources such as TV or music. Older units have an older form of Dolby ProLogic which wasn't as good as DPL II/IIx.

Most HT processors also offer DSP modes that use the surround speakers to simulate surround effects. They may be named things like "Hall", "Stadium", "Church", things like that. The quality of these simulations vary widely from one processor to the next, and they are often novelty features that are quickly forgotten by most HT enthusiasts.

Sorry Howie, moved this to the appropriate area

Yes there is a way, simply connect the audio output from your TV (or STB if you have one) to your HT receiver or pre/pro and watch tv in DPL / DPL II(x) Feeding radio or a CD megachanger etc to your reciever / pre/pro will allow you to do the same thing with music as well. Heck you can even connect a PC to your home theatre and have it act as a music server or listen to internet radio (though not as impressive sound quality). There are tons of option to "always have something on". Maybe you can be more specific as to exactly what you're hoping to achieve and we can offer more help from there
