Does anyone know where I can get the Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD for less than $35? I'm a college student that just spent $500 on a TV and I don't want to have to pay $40-50 for a DVD. Is it really that good?

Tomy, yes it is that good, but the Digital Video Essentials DVD is getting close to release and is available on pre-order from Digital Eyes for about $18. It's earlier version (ProLogic) is still available for about $35-40 too - go figure. So, if you can wait, this is a GOOD price.
FYI the site shows it OOP, but it hasn't been released yet.

If you don't need all the extra's Avia offers the S&V disc that you can get a best buy for $20 is reportedly pretty good...its basically a slightly watered down version of Avia. Actually this one offers some things that Avia doesn't since it contains 6.1 test tones which would be nice.

Before you check out Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD look at
the setup stuff on the DVDs you have ex: StarWars EP1 or 2, Toy Store, T2:UE, etc. Look for THX Optimizer in the menus and guess what? Test patterns for video and audio and details on how to use each one. Which is the same Idea as the Avia stuff. I have used both on installs and setups. I get the same results with both.

Tomy,
Just give me your address and I'll send you an Avia for free. Yes, that's right, for free...not even postage. And, it's not even open. Actually, we can call it courtesy of HTguide and me, because I won it here. But, I already have one and can't think of anything better than to give it to you. Anything to help a struggling home theater junkie/college student along.

Thanks guys,
As soon as I won it, my wife and I decided that I'd wait to see someone posting who really might want it, but not have enough money to comfortably buy it. You guys are the ones who should be thanked. Forums like this have saved me a ton of money and made my buying decisions so much more informed.

by Chris DFor those who don't know, new editions of Avia and Digital Essentials are about to be released for new technologies since the original editions. Both videos are useful reference items to use in learning about, setting up, and fully calibrating your system in both audio and video. I own both original...-

I finally got my new Toshiba 65HDX82 Widescreen RPTV set up. :yesnod:
It was a long day as I had to work it by myself. Trying to get that styrofoam out from under that 280 pound set was not as easy as I thought it would be. :sos: Picking up one end with one hand (while on my old and...-

by Andrew PrattCan someone please try calibrating with a calibration DVD like Avia and then see how those levels compare to the 1098's internal test tones? I thought the 1055 and 1066 I had were pretty close to the avia test tones incl the subwoofer channel but when I tried it with my new 1098 I found the bass to...-

by stjoenewtThis last week I was calibrating my RSX-1055 and noticed a problem. I was using the AVIA disc in a Panasonic DVD player. The DVD player is connected via both optical into one of the digital inputs, and analog into the multi-channel inputs. I did this due to the fact that the player can play DVD-A recordings...-

by David MeekI've been using Video Essentials for about 3 years (I think) with great results on audio and video. I recently purchased the AVIA DVD and adjusted my RPTV with it last night. When I was finished, the picture had a very noticable red tint, especially with facial tones. I went back and re-adjusted it...-
