    Paul,

    Yowie! My RX-V1 is two years old and already OOP! That 1300 does look awfully good for the price point. The $200 more for the 2300 gets you 10WPC, multiple zones, and a macro-capable remote.

      Just a little comparison on weights and 'rated power'.

      RX-V800 - 33lbs, 5 x 100W = 500W
      RX-V1000 - 33lbs, 5 x 100W = 500W
      RX-V1200 - 33lbs, 6 x 80W = 480W
      RX-V1300 - 33lbs, 6 x 100W = 600W
      RX-V2200 - 33lbs, 6 x 100W = 600W
      RX-V2300 - 33lbs, 6 x 110W = 660W

      What I find interesting is that the overall weight has not increased but the rated power has increased. I know that true measured output is typically less than the rated output.

        Paul,

        That weight thing is interesting. How can a receiver with 6 discrete channels weigh the same as their cheapo model????? I wonder if those are accurate weights listed.

          Just an FYI: Yamaha has for years rated their amps very conservatively. The RX-V1 is rated at 110 WPC x 6 into an 8 ohm load. IIRC, on a magazine's bench test, it was actually putting out about 130-133 WPC x 6.

            It would be funny if this worked like CPUs in the PC industry. When you buy a 1Ghz CPU that's often the lowest clock speed that chip is reliably tested at. Often times, it'll run much faster if you don't mind playing around a bit.
            What if the amp in each receiver is the same thing just "set" to deliver the rated WPC depending upon model number and dollars spent.

            Probably not...but it would be funny if that were the case.

              David,

              This site: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Holl...1/ratevsac.htm

              shows Sound & Vision's test bed data on several popular amps/receivers. According to their data the RX-V1 clips well before the rated 110w (into 5 channels).

              I'm not really up on which magazine is best at measuring these specs but it's my understanding this is one category Sound & Vision does fairly well.

                Now that's interesting. :?

                I'll have to dig out my back-issues and find out which one it was and what the specifics were. That was one of the criteria I used when buying the unit - power into all channels. Hmmm.

                  Is silent cinema Yamaha's equivalent to Dolby Headphone? Just curious. Thanks to anyone who can answer that.

                    David: In the past I would agree that Yamaha had pretty accurate power ratings. Conservative, I'm not sure I'd go that far. I know there was some contrevorsy on the RX-V1 ratings when the first test came out and they, Sound and Vision, retested and came to those final numbers that are on the chart.

                    A disturbing trend that I've been seeing is that tested power is dropping from published power. As you can see from the chart, from 1999, the RX-V795 listed at 85Wx5 and tested at 85Wx5. The RX-V1000 rated at 100Wx5 tested at 78Wx5, and the RX-V1200 rated at 80Wx6 tested at 50Wx5 and 47Wx6.

                    And from the chart you can see that it's not just Yamaha, but others as well.

                    Just for clarification, those models that I listed are not exactly the same 'level' across the years.

                    So here's how I see the pedigree:

                    RX-V795 -> RX-V800 -> RX-V1200 - RX-V1300
                    RX-V995 -> RX-V1000 -> RX-V2200 - RX-V2300

                    I thought it interesting that the published weights were the same for all those models.

                    Oh, I'm an owner of a Yamaha as well.

                    Sili: I don't think power works that way, but I'm not sure. But I wonder if the same couldn't be said about the DSP chips used. The models RX-V300, 1000, 800, 730 and 630 all use the YSS-928 DSP chip. The new RX-V3200, 2300, 1300, 2200, 1200 all use the YSS-938 chip.

                    Gordon: Silent Cinema from the glossary of a Yamaha manual:

                    YAMAHA has developed a natural, realistic sound effect DSP algorithm for headphones. Parameters for headphones have been set for each sound field so that accurate representations of all the sound filed programs can be enjoyed on headphones.
                    Is that the same as Dolby Headphone?

                      I've gone to every magazine site I could think of and all of the specs on the RX-V1 show about 104 WPC x 6. I guess I either confused the single-channel-driven test at about 150W, or I saw the earlier test data that was replaced. Well, that's another "belief" I can lay to rest. xx)

                      Not that it matters to my ears, though - sometimes I still have trouble thinking the sounds coming out of this are from a reciever. (shamelss plug )

                        Yea, measured WPC doesn't matter as long as the thing can fill your room with sound to your likeing. Sounds like you're happy so the specs don't mean a thing!

                            I bought my RX-V1 as soon as they came out a little over 2 years ago. The Pronto-clone wasn't available. I wish it was!
