    Yamaha RX-Z1

Info seems tough to get on this new receiver.

Any one seen a release date?

    Price estimate?

Will it be packaged with Yamaha's RAV-2000 (their Pronto)?

Pictures I've seen indicate it comes with the same remote shipped with the RX-V1. However, I know Yamaha had a promotion early this year where they gave away free RAV-2000's to RX-V1 buyers. So perhaps they'll ship the RAV-2000 standard with the RX-Z1 in the US???

    Sili,

Last I heard, the ship date is mid to late April and street price will start around $2,700 US. There is already a forum dedicated to the RX-Z1/DSP-AZ1 (as it's known outside the US). It may have some more info for you. . .

For the record: I won't be jealous if you spring for this baby. Seriously though, if you do, I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed my RX-V1.

Oh, here's an image of the monster:

Damn, I love Yamaha's sense of style!

Damn if it isn't the prettiest receiver out there!

Thanks for the link. Now I can learn tons...to prep for my sale of the purchase to the wifey. I'm still not opposed to going for the RX-V1 if stores begin clearing them out.

$2700...what kind of prices will internet discounters be offering?

The Elite 49TX lists for around $3900 but Etronix sells it for $2400. That's quite a discount! Would it be unrealistic to expect to find the RX-Z1 for $2200 or lower?

Oh man, you don't want to go there! Trust me.

Yamaha is VERY protective about their TOTL (top of the line) stuff. It's not sellable via the Internet. Not if you want the warranty to be valid. I bought my RX-V1 through a "group purchase" (sound familiar?) at a forum I used to frequent (which got WAY too big for its own good). Well, guess what? The warranty was invalid! I got a really good price on the unit, but it's not worth it in the long run. . . . especially if you have to have any major work done on it.

Just my 2 cents (as always).

Yea...but I've had great luck with electronics. I'd rather take the chance and get a good price. Besides, in my experience manufacturers don't ask for a receipt when you take something in for repair.

Sili I respect your opinion but, I'm with David on this one.

I got a very nice deal on my Elite 27TX but, if I begin to have the issues that others have had, the cost could easily become more than I'm willing to pay out of pocket. It seemed like a good deal at the time but now...

The Yammies have a pretty good service record so you maybe okay.

Well, as much as I've enjoyed the sound quality of my RX-V1, there was an issue with it (being the first of a new line) that cost me a couple of trips to the local service dept - to the tune of about $500 total. This came close to nixing the savings on price by going through that "group purchase".

It turns out that if the pre/outs get enough dust in them, that specific channel shuts down. WOW, a vanishing channel! The fix is to run a jack in and out of the plug to break up the accumulation, or to cap the plug as soon as you purchase the unit to prevent dust accumulation. I'm using the Cardas RCA caps.

However by the time this simple fix was discovered, I'd replaced a couple of boards, etc. . . . I do feel that Yamaha has a grip on this and has corrected it in the RX-Z1, but as always, YMMV!

Paul those cardas caps are nice but for the budget conscious just grab some of the RCA plugs from radio shack. You can pick up a pack of plastic ones for a couple of bucks for a bag full. I soldered the ends together to elimiate any interference on the input channels but don't do this for outputs or the receiver won't be happy with you If all you want to do is protect from dust you won't even have to solder them just stick them on and forget about it.

Here's a thread discussing the merits of shorting inputs.

From DIYCable.com they are $28 per dozen.

One point I'd like to add about the Cardas Caps is that they don't "short" so they are good for input and output RCA jacks.

David the ones I picked up from Radio Shack aren't shorted either. I had to manually solder them to short so if I wanted ones for the inputs I'd just use unsoldered ones.

Andrew, did you just build a mound of flux in the bottom of the cap until it was tall enough to contact the center prong on the jack?

Well, supposedly the remote included with the US version will be their full Pronto clone. Not 100% sure yet but that's what I've read on the net.
