Budget receiver for 4 ohms speakers

    Hi there,

I'm trying to decide on a budget receiver (~$600), apparently at that price range I can't drive 4 ohms speakers...

    So that brings 2 questions:

1 What do you think it would be a good choice at that price?
2 What do you use to drive your 4 ohms?

I drive all 7 of my 4 ohm speakers with an Emotiva UPA-7(possibly the best amplifier for the money in home theater). You can use an Onkyo receiver to drive your speakers and they are rated at 4 ohm delivery for the TX-NR708 that you should be able to find in your price range. Here are a couple of links:

If you already have a receiver with preamp outputs for all the channels you intend to use Emotiva is running a holiday sale that is pretty good right now.

Good luck whatever you choose. These are what I would choose.

Good recs by CSFG. If you have something that will process the surround formats that you want, and has pre-outs, I say go for the Emotiva stuff. I have not used them personally, but have not heard many complaints. ...and the price is right, and the performance should in theory be quite a step up.

For recievers, I am not sure which are rated for 4 ohm, but you can usually find last years models for quite a cut in price. You just have to look around.

        Thanks for the recs.
I only have an old Philips HTib so it is a no go with the emotiva
It looks like the TX-SR707 is a good deal... Does anybody around here own it?

          Hi, I also have a UPA-7.
It is front ended with a Harman Kardon 335.
          Prior to the 335 I used a H/K 520.
It drove my SF speakers, at 4 ohms.
I think most if not all H/K receivers can do 4 ohms
          with no problems.

          Enjoy, Ron

Denon's usually can drive 4ohm without a problem...even the new $500 ones. Ask around to see if anyone is driving 4ohm from a bargain denon... you may be suprised.

So I just ordered the tx-nr708 from amazon... It will take some time to arrive all the way to Mexico.

Congrats! Just saw the thread and it's exactly what I was coming in here to recommend :T

In fact I was going to post almost verbatim what ClosetSciFiGeek did  So if you end up craving more power on the cheap, have a look at adding the Emotiva amps

We'll see, I still need to build my speakers... So it will take some time, in the meantime I will use some cheap pioneer HTiB speakers.

Not sure yet... I have been looking at the Ministatements and Statement CC. But CJD's Garnachas look interesting...

If you do the statements are you going to reduce the internal volume based on the new drivers?

I was thinking yes, perhaps add a double wall in the back to put the xovers and the terminals, I still need to find out if that leaves me space for the port... But I have time, as I don't have budget right now :P

                            Something like this:

It is 4 inches shorter and the space in the back is about 4.5L so it is something like 11L smaller, around 22%... As I said, I still have time to think and ask :P

Looks like a good idea. You might want to put up a thread asking if anyone has used the new RS180 in a smaller enclosure or the same enclosure and got any different results. I would bet though that there won't be a lot of difference with that small of a volume change. Good luck.

It is up and running, with some aiwa speakers for fronts and pioneer htib speakers for center and surrounds. Not bad, considering the crappy speakers...
So far I have only used the networking for firmware upgrade. It went smooth.
I'll toy with streaming today, I'm using my PS3 as BD player and streaming, so if the networking of the nr is not stellar I'll keep using the PS3.
