Hi All,
Found this interesting review on youtube regarding using a AVR and comparing it to an AVR + Power Amplifier combo.
As a number of AVR manufacturers output power ratings are not accurate and with the new HD and HDMI standards, you may not want to outlay a huge amount of money on a new AVR with half of the features you will never use. Alternatively you could purchase a lower end AVR which includes support for the HD formats and HDMI connections and then utilise a power amplifier.
Another bonus as when it comes to upgrading again you can just change the AVR, which is a cheaper upgrade, then having to fork out for a top of the range AVR again when its outdated.
And example in AUD is:
Yamaha 3800 $2200
VS.
Yamaha 663 $700
Rotel 1075 $1500
Now when its comes to upgrading again, option two provides grather flexiability and better total cost of ownership.
Just something to think about for all those looking to upgrade to the latest formats.
