    Toslink vs Coax

    hi guys,

still confused about the best way to connect my dvd player (pioneer 989) to preamp (bryston sp2) for 5.1 movie watching. currently have it connected via toslink but being told coax is a better option.

    what does everyone think?

    cheers,

    julie

The only way you can answer that truthfully is to open up both your DVD player and the Bryston and figure out which converter is of a better quality.

I have not heard a difference except for when I switch to Digital Silvercats from CAT cables. Then, and only then, did I notice a difference with my DVD player with optical and coax. The coax sounded noticeably better using a silver cable over the optical output. I then put back my Cobalt Digital cable (copper) and couldn't tell any difference between the coax and optical. So needless to say I stayed with Silver digital CAT cable and upgraded the one for my HD-STB as well.

Otherwise, there's probably little to no difference between optical and coax. Only difference is another conversion (to light) of the audio signal with optical.
      Digital Audio makes me Happy.

        JMHO,

The difference will be with music not movies. But I'm an analog not digital person when it comes to music.

The two options being considered here are both digital, optical and coax.

Looks like you've already decided, but I prefer coax because...

It works with readily available and inexpensive cables that I can make myself, and it seems to work reliably over fairly long distances without added expenses.
There are some things which are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know which things these are. :scratchhead:

CS DAC in RSP 1098 & optical digital MacBook
                    by sirbogey
Is it correct to assume that my MacBook can be hooked up to the RSP 1098 thru optical digital (Toslink to MiniPlug) wire and the sound will be directly decoded thru 1098's Crystal Semiconductor's 24 bit/192kHz DAC without the need of another external DAC.

                    any thoughts. :T

Previously on this forum there was a discussion regarding optical vs. coaxial digital interconnects. I personally favor optical for the isolation factor, but there was some discussion as to whether cheap optical receivers/transmitters could cause errors.

HDMI Switcher with Optical/Coax audio extraction
                    by aud19
I'm looking at getting a Roku 2 media streamer to play our mkv and flac files off our NAS (via Plex) but my older Rotel pre/pro does not support HDMI. So I'm looking at purchasing an HDMI switch that has optical/coax audio extraction to send audio to the Rotel and the video over HDMI to the TV. Gaining...

                    toslink (Optical) or coaxial?
                    by Nathan P
So? Which do you use/prefer. I have optical right now, but I have setup a home theater with coaxial, and both sounded great. Is there any real world difference, or is it just preference?
