question about scientific atlanta explorer hd 8300 and a rotel amp

Ok my question is that I have a integrated rotel rb985bx that has no optical out but my xbox 360 and my scientific atlata explorer hd 8300 has an optical out as well. So my question is that is there a way to connect my integrated rotel amp to the scientific atlanta and connect using optical out to the xbox 360?? Would I lose sound quality that way because the integrated amp and the 8300hd will be connected by the red and white plug(sorry dont know what its called) and then the 8300hd will connect via optical straight to the xbox 360.. will this work??

Wait, do you mean the Rotel RB985 doesn't have any optical inputs? I'm confused why you would need an optical out to the xbox 360 when it doesn't have an optical input on it.
