    Dont get the point

This a bit off Home Theater but it most closely deals with it. I am wondering if I have a 5.1 surround sound system whats the point of HD DVDs? Most standard dvds can play 5.1 surround sound and if I got an upconverting DVD player I get HD quality picture. So why is their a point to HD DVDs besides more storage space?

    Welcome.

I think the point is the better picture quality. As I understand it HD will provide 1080p which will provide better picture quality. Now what someone needs is a display that will take advantage of this increased resolution.

There is the sound format as well, which I have not actually demo'd in person, so I can't really say if I would prefer that over my existing 5.1 dvd sound.

Storage, yup more storage, but with the higher resolution there is the need for more storage. There is also more interactivity built into the HD standard. I'm not sure I would ever take advantage of it.

So I've been very pleasantly sitting on the side lines waiting for the evenutal winner.

That's just my thoughts. There's a sticky thread that discusses more of the issues between HD and Blue-ray.

I'm amazed at what I can buy today, a decent DVD player that is progressive scan and basically reads all formats for about $100.

Well with me I've only got a 720p TV. So I can't take advantage of 1080p. I will agree that HD DVDs look better than normal DVDs. I use an Xbox 360 and I'm pretty sure it up converts standard DVDs. Is the sound quality on HD DVDs any better than normal DVDs? I plan to get 5.1 speakers so will there be any difference between standard Def sound and hi def sound?

480i or 480p upconverted to 720p or 1080i or 1080p is a far cry from the native resolution of 1080p HD DVDs.

The sound quality should be better due to the lossless format of the LPCM soundtrack on HD DVDs. Whether or not your audio system can fully present these benefits is another matter.

I have an Oppo upconverting DVDp and a PS3 for Blu-Ray discs. The PQ on the BRDs is clearly better than the standard DVDs on my 720p FPTV. I can't say on SQ, didn't really notice a huge difference.

The picture quality from blu-ray is much better than that from an upconverting DVD player, even on HDTV's that are not 1080p. I also think that the sound quality on existing formats is a little better because of the higher bit rates. Also, if you have a reciever or processor that can accept it, the uncompressed LPCM is better than regular DD or DTS tracks. Also, the larger your screen is the more noticeable the difference in picture quality.

Do I need 5.1 for music DVDs?
              by bigburner
I'm really into music, using Rotel and B&W gear set up in a 2.1 configuration (floorstanding speakers plus a sub). However I also enjoy music DVDs and am planning to upgrade my system in that department.

My question is this: do I need to upgrade my music system to 5.1 / 7.1 in order...

Why is Blu-ray audio better than standard DVD audio?
              by bigburner
People rave about the audio quality on Blu-ray DVDs. Why?

A standard DVD includes an LPCM uncompressed 2-channel mix sampled at 48 or 96kHz with 16 or 24 bits/sample.

A Blu-ray DVD includes a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround mix sampled at 48kHz with 24 bits/sample and an LPCM...
