    Got a PS3...Questions/concern

    Hi-

    Juyst picked up a 60Gb PS3 this weekend. I poicke dup some movies etc.. One of the films was "XXX" I always liked the sound job on that film, and the cinematography is nice...

    The concern is when I was plying the Film, it "stuck" 4 times. The image froze on the screen and audio playback stopped. After about 5-10sec, then it would go back into playback as if nothing happened. While it was hung up, the controller was also locked up.

    Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

    I also played "Corpse Bride" which looked fantastic, but it did NOT exhibit the same behavior...

    Any suggestions? I updated the system software to 1.51.

    sounds like something with the disc...Is it always in the same spot? If so I would take that movie back and exchange it for another copy.

      I never had the same problem unless I have a faulty DVD. The thing that drives me crazy is PS3 is zone restricted on DVD's.

        I have only watched 2 movies with my PS3. The first movie, Talegeda Nights, I bought and it played fine. The other, Crank, was a rental and stopped a couple of times during playback. The nice thing was I was able to make it play by just rewinding a little, that never worked on my regular DVD player. The other weird thing was the PS3 couldnt read Crank at first, had to eject and re-insert. I would like to say this was due to it being a rental but no one seems to be renting the BR and HD DVD's from my local Blockbuster, they are always in stock.

        Maybe the PS3 was trying to tell me something as Crank was pretty bad. I knew what to expect going in (have seen both transporter movies) but man, how does this stuff get green lit?

          I am hearing that the 1.51 firmware is buggy and some people have been reporting the very issue you described on the Sony forum. I am running 1.32 but I downloaded 1.50. I am reluctant to install the update for fear that my PS3 will catch the bug.

            There is a huge thread at AVS on using the PS3 as a BD player, and this has come up dozens of times over there. There are varying reasons suspected, from firmware glitches, to the network connection causing timeouts (with the suggested fix of disconnecting the network or turning off wifi while watching movies), to just cleaning the discs.

            Everyone else has described the same issue as you, non-repeatable hangs that don't re-occur in the same place on the disc.

            So, yes, a lot of people are experiencing the same thing (although not a majority).

            Sony has received complaints about it and is looking into. You could add your voice to the complaint list by calling customer service as it probably helps if greater numbers of people report it.

              BB, do you know if anyone has tried to reinstall an older firmware to see if that fixes the problem?

                Todd- A few people have reported experiencing some "lockups" with the PS3 after upgrading to 1.41, 1.42, or 1.51. This likely will be fixed with the large update that has been rumored to be coming in March that would be at the same time as the European PS3 release. However, it sounds like you're having more lockups than others. I've had about 2 myself. See if it's the disc, and then if not, we may or may not need to look further for you.

                Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

                  I am pretty sure I read in the thread that there is no means to down rev your firmware.

                  I don't actually have a PS3 yet, I am getting one in a few weeks when I return home from Japan. With a Blu-ray copy of Innocence (Ghost in the Shell II) which will look muy cool in HD.

                    Hi Chris/Everyone else...

                    After reading a large thread on the AVS forum, Im inclined to believe that the firmware is the issue here; however it seems that wireless networking is part of the blame here. I *think* I know why- the PS3 is logging the connection out for some reason. I also think that I can force the connection to stay open at my router. Many people are stating that turning off networking inthe PS3 is a workaround. i will investiate and see what I comeup with. I'm more relieved that it's somewhat of a common problem as opposed to an isolated one. Will be interesting to see how deep I can get into this sytemm he eh he...the tweaker emerges....

                      I like to share some of recent experience with my new 3D TV setup with my current Rotel RSP1098/RMB1095 setup. I am hoping this information is useful for anyone with the same configuration out there that are interested to take the 3D plunge.

                      Hey Folks,

                      Lately, I've been using my PS3 for DVD and BD playback but I've run into a problem. My PS3 connects to my phone's wi-fi hotspot when I start it up, sucking huge amounts of data in the process. I have no internet at my apartment and use my phone's 'hot spot' for connecting to...

                      Is DTS-HD MA possible with PS3 and RSP-1068?
                      by bnieman
                      Hello!

                      I currently own a Rotel RSP-1068 and am considering a PS3 for Blu-Ray playback. It's my understanding the PS3 can now decode DTS-HD MA and send it over HDMI or Optical as a LPCM uncompressed signal after a firmware update released in late April of 2008.

                      Is this true?...

                      PS3 Output settings to Parasound C2
                      by Hirogen
                      My PS3 is connected to my Parasound C2 via Optical Out. This works very well for the sound. However I wonder which audio output options I can safely select on the PS3, I see the following options;

                      1. DD5.1 ---> already selected and works
                      2. DTS 5.1 ---> already selected and...

                      Question about linear PCM vs. bit stream, freezing PS3
                      by tf1216
                      I was reading this thread about my PS3 locking up during BR playback.

                      One solution was to switch from linear PCM to bit stream. Can anyone tell me about these two methods?

                      Even better, can anyone tell me how to stop my PS3 from freezing?
