    Denon DVD problem

I have a Denon DVD 1000 attached to my Mits 55" rear projection TV (WS55903?) via component cables. last night I noticed that the picture quality was poor - ghosting images in cyan, fuzzy picture. Played the DVD on a Sony player in the BR and pic was sharp. The component cables on the Denon were well seated. I know it is not the DVD itself - it's a player/connection problem. When I am loading a DVD the words OPEN is visble on the screen and is out of focus with ghosting images of cyan & magenta. I guess I could try another input on the back of the TV. Any other suggestions?

BTW, I was watching 'The Matador' with Pierce Brosnan & Gre Kinnear - an entertaining DVD.

    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you should try to calibrate your Mits. There are several DVDs available to step you through the process, of which my favorite is Digital Video Essentials with AVIA coming in second. Try this before spending lots of time and effort on other avenues.

One thing you could try before that is to switch the DVD players and cables between the two sets and see if you get different results. That'll give you some idea as to whether it's the TV or the DVD player/cables. If the funky picture moves with the player and cables, then move just the players back to their original TVs and see what happens to the image quality. If the image moves again it's in the DVD player. If it doesn't it's in the cabling.

If the problems persist with the Mits regardless, then get that calibration disc. I hope this helps.

The big Mits sets I've had, 48 and 54, occasionally needed the convergence module resoldered. They are notorious for solder connections wacking out the colors.
This is not difficult to do, if your a techy, I am.
For me taking a rear projection apart for soldering is "fun".

I recently had the convergence module resoldered. If it was bad for DVD input then wouldn't it be bad for cable too? The cable input looks fine on the TV, the DVD causes the probelm which tells me it is either the input or cables. I will first switch the players to narrow down between player and cables. If pic is good then, it is the player. If not, then cables or input. I will then swithc inputs. If pic is good then input is bad. If no change then it must be cables (component cables). I don't have an extra set of component cables to try - the reason for these steps of elimination.

How long has it been since that last repair?
It seems you are narrowing the problem down.
You could modulate the dvd as a temperary measure.

They were soldered in May of this year. Now, if it was the convergence module wouldn't it affect all of the inputs? DVD, VCR, cable? I'll find out this weekend what the problem is after I do my process of elimination.

It was the input - my only component input not used. I had to go with a S-video connection - OK since my DVD is not progressive scan.

Are you good to go with S?

S-video will be good for now...
