Opinions on sound quality of OPPO OPDV971H please

Everyone talks about how good the picture quality is on the OPPO 971, but the sound quality rarely gets a mention.

Can anyone tell me how it performs with music DVDs?

    Thank you.
    Nigel.

Well Bigburner, I sent mine back, to me the sound quality was not as good as my Rotel unit. It wasnt bad, but I did loose some of that big cinematic sound that I had with my Rotel.

The sound is not as good from the OPPO as from my Panny RP82 - it could have to do with the cable though as well.

I use the Panny for music and the OPPO for movies...

I have the 971 for a year. I would consider it a very good musical player for DVDs and CDs.

I remember playing with the settings and if my memory was correct the best was to set the sound output to raw. Using it as a transport (single digital cable) to Tag McLaren Audio AV32R processor (using the processor's DAC) gave the best sound. Careful listening suggested the Oppo analogue output voltage might be a bit lower giving effectively a softer sound pressure levels. At least compared to my other 2 much more costly players ..... Linn CD player and the Tag McLaren DVD transport. When comparisons were level match more closely the Oppo appear to be a very good sounding player indeed.

Don't have the Oppo 970. However, if the Nuforce digital amps people were telling the truth even that player would be worth a very careful listening. They suggest it has an 'exceptional' audio quality for DVD Audio playback.

Thanks wolfgang. I went ahead and bought the 971. I ordered it from OPPO on Tuesday evening New Zealand time and it was delivered to my doorstep on Saturday morning. Amazing really. I bought a 42" Samsung HD plasma too and spent all weekend rearranging my system. I haven't had time to work out the best audio settings yet but I'm reasonably pleased with the SQ so far. I have to say I'm absolutely blown away by the PQ.

Both of My Oppo players are defective... They just spin and say "Loading"

oh well, I got a few good plays out of them... They were fun to compare with other players, very competitive picture (Crap for a transport) but nice video...

Bigburner, Hope after a few more days to listening it is what you were looking for.

Andrew, I have no problem with mine yet. How old were your players and did you ask Oppo for help already? We all know they were very good in helping to sort out difficulties in setting them up and software problems. It would be good to know if they are happy to help us when the player breakdown.

I had my first one smoke. Literally. Ended up returning the second one for a refund as its S/PDIF couldn't handle the long run from my PJ to my pre/pro, kept dropping out.

Ended up buying the one off my friend I had talked him into buying as he lost his job, and have been using it with the HDILA TV I got a year ago, and it has worked well. What is nice is I downloaded some modd'ed firmware that unlocks all the UPO's studios put on the disks. No more forced previews and FBI warnings for me. On the small screen anyway.

                            Agreed!

I just used them for fun stuff like tests and comparisons between machines, it's not a problem.

It is staggering the number of cheap-O DVD players i've burned through in the last 5 years, all defective .... (2) Sony (1) JVC (1) Panasonic (2) Oppo (1) Toshiba (1) Denon

Theres one more I can't even remember, maybe Apex?
And I'm not even a movie guy ...

My D1 is crawling along like Anakin after his duel with Obiwan, but I only use it with my FP.

Sometimes takes 5-6 tries to get it to play the movie. But until I switch to an HDCP compliant FP, I'm stuck with it.

I love watching music DVDs, and I want to improve the quality of the audio side. I currently use an LG DVD which is connected to my Rotel / B&W hi-fi system.

Normally, I would probably just stream them to my xbox, but this might be a simple solution to that. Also,...
