we tried to watch a PAL dvd last night. this dvd player read the disc then the tray opened. do we have to activated anything in the menu to play PAL dvds? the real dvd we want is " FACE-OFF" in DTS.

I would think that you would have to activate PAL through the DVD menu (I am uncertain of the DVD default menu). I would look at your menu options in the player and determine which options/features are available.
Do you still have the manual? The trouble-shooting guide is usually an invaluable resource for resolving issues.
Next step, call Pioneer tech support.

That is certainly unfortunate news June, that is certainly not what the specs stated.
