what % of budget should speakers be?

considering just equipment (and not room build out costs, treatments, etc.), what % of the overal equipment budget do you say needs to be invested in a 5.1 speaker setup? in other words, in a budget for receiver (or preamp/amplifier separates), front speakers, surrounds, center, subwoofer, cd/dvd player, etc. (ie all the electronic hardware), what percent of that total budget should go into just the 5.1 speakers?

Here is a breakdown of my HT on a percentage basis, give or take a few percentage points:

    TV/Video: 25-30%
    Speakers: 35-40%
    Receivers/Amps:25-30%
    Cables: 10-15%

Hopefully this will provide a barometer for measurement.

    Peace and blessings,

    Azeke

Purely looking at the audio part (i.e. minus the display) I've got about 70% invested in speakers. This is a 4.0 setup, I'm considering adding a sub at some point, which would skew the ratio even more towards the speakers. Actually, since music is important to me, the fronts are more than 50% of the total cost.
It seems to me that speakers are where the investment is best felt compared to sources and amps. They need to be properly dimensioned, of course.

I spent around 50% of my investment on my speakers. Eventually when I have full surround finally completed on my system it will be somewhere between 50-60%. I wanted to make sure my front stereo speakers were top notch, and in order to do so I had to sacrifice surround sound for a little bit of time.

How do you divide your HT budget?
              by markov
I'm curious as to how other people divided up their budgets for their home theatre. Specifically what percentage you spent on 5.1 speaker set up vs. electronics (for this purpose lets assume only receiver or pre/pro and 5 channels of amplification and 1 disc player of any type). If you want to give...

              Measurement Mic on a Budget
              by JonMarsh
We have a number of inquires from time to time about what to use for measurement on a budget- most folks aren't in the market for an HP preamp and a Bruel & Kjar mic! And I wanted to have something inexpensive to carry around with my laptop, too.

After trying out a few different mic's...

we're looking at curts tritrix and zaph's bamtm...

looks wise, the nod goes to the BAMTM's, they also have a 1.5...

Used RSP-976 or New 1066? Budget issues...
              by Steve Elias
I have the opportunity to purchase a RSP-976 for $500. Or, I could purchase a new 1066 for approximately $1400. Given the situation described below, I'm tempted to get the 976, but only if the two-channel sound is not dramatically inferior to the two-channel sound of the 1066. If I get the 976, I can...

Please help me choose a budget CD/SACD player
              by vasia
I am looking for a budget CD/SACD player. MY priorities are redbook CDs and then SACD (I only have one disk right now). Looking at the audiogon, etc., it seems like there is a bunch of options on used/older models. My budget is 250-300. Please help me choose between, maybe:
