    Marrying Denon components

Recerntly purchased a Denon AVR3805 & a DVD3910. Have'nt set them up yet. What is the best way to interconnect the audio ? From the manual it appears vaguely that the audio is best connected through analogue terminals (5 wire). The denon link on the DVD (SE 2.0) does not play SCAD although the one on the AV (SE 3.0) is capable. Denon promises an upgrade soon (at a price). Do not want a jumble of wires and frequent visit to sys setup.

    Openions ?

Hi Siddhartha, welcome to The Guide. :welcome:

I'm afraid that since your proprietary link doesn't work your only option for high-def multi-channel music (SACD or DVD-A) is to go with 6 individual analog connections.

I'd say buy 6 analogue connections, but don't spend so much money - the denon link is really promising!

Ummm... two ways to go about this:

        1. You can try to go the simple route and use Denon Link only to pass all audio. (you'll still need video connections) However, as you point out, Denon Link doesn't pass everything yet. Denon is releasing upgrades, but no guarantees it'll be all-inclusive. There's lots of issues still going on with passing SACD and DVD-A via HDMI/IEEE1394. You'll have to wait to go this route, and no guarantee you'll get it all.

        2. You can use analog 5.1 connections. It'll fully work right now, and you can upgrade in the future if Denon Link is upgraded. With this option, you'll be paying for the 5.1 connections, and how much depends on how much quality you want.

If it was me, I'd go with #2.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

Even if you could use Denon link to pass your DVD-A, you won't be able to do SACD until SACD II is available in the next 12 to 24 months. Hence, you are still going to need the analog cables. Don't worry though, it'll sound fantastic!

            Jimmy,
I was under the impression that the Denon link had been approved for SACD itself.

              Here's the announcement:

Denon recently announced that its proprietary Denon Link digital interface has been approved for transmission of Super Audio CD (SACD) signals by Sony & Philips, developers of the SACD format, under the new and upcoming SACD 2.0 specification. Sony and Philips will release an update to the current SACD 1.3 specification, approving the DENON Link digital interface. The acceptance and support of Denon Link by Sony and Philips marks a significant step forward in bringing the finest digital audio entertainment to today’s most discriminating consumers in the easiest, most elegant manner possible. Products in accordance with the updated specification will be available in the near future.

Denon sought and received approval from the DVD Forum in 2003 for transmission of DVD-Audio signals, and with approval by SACD specification, Denon can provide a single high-resolution, multi-channel digital connection for all high-performance digital audio signals, including SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, linear PCM, packed PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS and MP3 digital audio data.

Denon has been a strong supporter of the high-performance digital audio format since its inception and was in fact the first content provider to release a dual-layer “hybrid” title in 1999. Denon Link will pass only the audio portion of DVD-Video titles.

ADDENDUM TO NEWS RELEASE REGARDING ADVANCE APPROVAL OF DENON LINK INTERFACE FOR THE UPCOMING 2.0 SACD SPECIFICATION

All SACD players currently in the marketplace fall under the existing 1.3 SACD specification, for which the Denon Link digital interface has not yet been approved. Negotiations to obtain 1.3 specification approval for the Denon Link are still underway. Meanwhile, Sony and Philips, the developers of the SACD format, have announced that the next generation of SACD products will fall under a new 2.0 specification, for which the Denon Link interface has been approved in advance.

Advance approval of Denon Link for the 2.0 specification means that when products that meet this specification begin to reach the marketplace, which is expected within 12 to 24 months, the Denon Link will be an immediate option for high-quality digital signal transmission capability. The Denon Link will share approval of the 2.0 SACD specification with other digital transmission methods, as well as a more technically robust DTCP (Digital Transmission copy protection) protocol.

At this time, Denon has no information about the upgradability of current 1.3 specification SACD products to the upcoming 2.0 specification. Information about upgradability is not yet available due to unknown technical requirements not yet finalized by Sony/Philips.

                Thanks guys

Thanks for the replies. I also thought analogue route is the best and then when an upgrade is available take a call. As a point of interest, from the manual it appears that upgrade will be some sort of "soft" one - meaning dowloadable. How ? through the RS 232 port ?

One thing the Japanese have not been able improve is the quality of their manuals.
