"There's a spunk of magic in your eyes"...

"Have you seen her, tell me have you seen her?"

    "Didn't I blow your mind this time, didn't I?"

    "Smiling faces..."

Those are some awesome greats. Name these group's songs:

    Rock Steady
    Wedding Bell Blues
The Way You Do The Things You Do
    Ooh Child
Could It Be I'm Falling In Love
    Tighten Up
    I Second That Emotion

      Hi all,

Well, my all-time favorites are Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, but there are many, many others I really enjoy.

Hey each one of the artists mentioned by the both of you have had a MAJOR
          IMPACT on the music industry!!!
I mean the 5th Dimention not only had a hit with Wedding Bell Blues,
they started thier string with Up, Up, and Away and had alot more than that.
Some folks think of Dock on the Bay when they think of Otis Redding, personally I think of Try a Little Tenderness! and when the Temptations did thier tune The Way You do the Things You Do Live at the Paramount in Seattle a while back, Well all I can tell all of you is that I was BLOWN AWAY
that concert also featured Levi Stubbs and the Four Tops!!! Man when they did Reach out Ill Be There The Crowd was Totally Inspired. I can't rightly
think of another hit that the Stairsteps had other than Ooh Child maybe you
can help me on this one Jimmy. Archie Bell and the Drells had a very cool hit
with Tighten up I really get into the rhythm patterns of that cut!!!
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles did I Second That Emotion!!! one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE classics ! Im not sure but I think Rick James did Rock Steady However I think I am way Off BASE about That and last but certianly not least The Late Great SAM COOK. This guy really defines the meaning of the word SOUL MUSIC one listen to You Send Me makes that statement true
I TRULY have a great passion for this type of music!!! So what about the rest of You Guys? do us all a FAVOR and post your Favorite SOUL Music!!!
          Thanks In Advance!!! :T

I love Smokey's music. The Four Tops were good too. Bernadette still gives me chills when I hear it. I also love those great duets by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell. Aretha Franklin did a great cover of Rock Steady. She's got a couple of pretty essential albums to her credit -- Lady Soul being one,for sure.

Bradf, Thanks for Bringing the Female Soul artists into this as well, one of my all time favorite albums by a female artist is FIRST TAKE by Roberta Flack
its a beautiful quiet album. Yeh when Levi yells out BERNADETTE!!! it does
give me chills. Heres to the late great LEVI STUBBS! What a voice he possesed. Heres another one Jr. Walker and the Allstars Man they had alot of rhythm in thier tracks!!!
              Keep em coming in guys!!!

You can't have a discussion about soul and leave out:

"The Godfather" himself, James Brown (and The JBs/Lynn Collins/Bobby Byrd/Maceo Parker et al)
                                            Curtis Mayfield
                                            Earth Wind & Fire
                                            Buddy Miles
                                            The Brothers Johnson
                                            Bobby Womack
                                            The Stylistics

Buddy Miles while known as the voice of the California Raisins, is still performing. I've got a couple of his '90s CDs, "Miles Away From Home" and "Hell and Back" with all-new material as well as a 1997 compilation of his old stuff that includes the live version of Down By The River. I also still have a copy of his "Live" double-LP.

Bobby Womack's most famous song was "If You Think You're Lonely Now (Wait Until Tonight Girl)." Bobby Byrd was a member of The Famous Flames, James Brown backup band and his right hand man. On many of James Brown's hits he can be heard calling out to "Bobby." Byrd's most notable hits as a solo act (produced by James Brown) were 'Hot Pants I'm Coming" and "Keep on...doing What You're Doing Baby."

Lyn Collins (dubbed the Female Preacher) by Brown was discovered and produced by him. Among her most notable hits were "Rock Me Again & Again," "Mama Feelgood," "Ain't No Sunshine" (a cover version of Bill Withers' song) and "Think (About It)." Following are a couple of links to MSN Entertainment Music that has more information and sound samples of the above-mentioned tracks. To access the samples, if you have pop-up blocking you may have to temporarily disable it, which I found to be the case.

Hey Bam, I gave Aretha her props early on in this thread. Lady Soul was one of the very few artists who could take any song and really make it their own. My favourite Aretha track is her very groovy cover of, I Say A Little Prayer. (Dionne who?)

Two more female artists worth a mention:
Carla Thomas - Queen of Memphis Soul.
Irma Thomas - definitive version of Time Is On My Side, completely spanks the Rolling Stones' later effort.

                                                    Another girl group:
The Royalettes -- good tune called Gonna Take A Miracle. That was about it.

                                                    Another team-up:
Peaches and Herb -- Lite version of Marvin and Tammi.

A Bobby Womack number, Across 110th Street, is featured prominently in QT's great movie, Jackie Brown. The Delfonics are heard, as well.

Here's a recommendation for a 4-disc boxed set called Hitsville USA #1 -- presents all the great Motown hits from the sixties, original mono mixes, just the way they were meant to be heard. Lots of Temps, Tops, Smokey, Marvin, Vandellas... you even get Does Your Mama Know About Me?, by Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers, Tommy Chong's old band.

This kind of stuff is great for the car deck.

Yes, Booker T and the MG's who not only had their own hits, but were the Stax supporting band to so many greats such as Otis Redding, who not only is my favorite soul singer, but wrote standards like Try a Little Tenderness and Respect.

I don't want you guys to forget the king of Irish soul though...Mr. Van the Man Morrison.

These guys were responsible for so many of the soul hits of the late 1960s and the 1970s. To refresh memories, H-D-H were the creators of just about all of the Diana Ross and The Supremes major hits, before leaving Motown Records to form their own record label(s). The Holland brothers and Dozier were also recording artists in their own right, although Dozier was the only one who really had any real success in that regard.

                                                                    Hot Wax/Invictus Artists:

Now, on one of the songs there, he's joined by Soloman Burke. Some have said his album, "Don't Give Up on Me" is one of the great ones. I keep on meaning to get it, but procrastinate.

Pretty good station for the kind of music you guys are talking about. I really like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and of course Marvin Gaye and the Vandellas.
