Most of Sony's SACD releases for classical have been essentially demonstrations of how great an archival medium this is for the preservation and transfer of "masterpeices" from the 50's and 60's, recorded originally on open reel. Now, for some that's a little bit of a disappointment, but it's also instructional: neither vinyl or CD releases have ever delivered those older recordings in their full glory to the consumer.
This Concerto Number 3 and collected solo piano works, featuring Arcadi Volodos, was recorded using Sony's DSD system both live and in the studio in late 1999 and early 2000. Wow! This is such a lush, transparent reading of a really nice performance- transparent and detailed without any hardness. This is what recorded music should sound like- like a window onto the performance.
If Rachmaninoff is one of your interests, by all means check this out. There is probably a CD of the same performance, using SBM downconversion from the DSD master- it would be a treat, also.
There are a ton of new SACD players being introduced this year, at much lower price points, so the music lovers out there should keep that in mind when planning their purchases.

Jon
