What Do You Use To Track Your CDs?

I finally got my CDs catalogued using CD Tracker (see my signature if you're curious), and now that I'm done, I was wondering what you use to keep track of yours? This is a freebie and the functionality isn't cutting edge, so I'm open to suggestions.

My tracking system for CDs is "random access memory" -- IOW, although I have the discs "sort of" arranged alphabetically on the shelves, I rely on my memory to access the random piles that get stacked around. :>)

I've tried out a couple of programs, including one that supposedly allowed use of a bar code scanner, which it did intermittently, but was so quirky it was actually faster to type in the entries manually.

Another program picked up disc ID info when you put it in your CD-ROM drive and then searched a few internet data bases for several minutes each disc to populate the rest of the fields. Since over half of my CDs are classical (your "other" category), the data bases didn't have very many of them and so it was back to manual data entry. This one was supposed to allow batching of entries so you could put in a bunch of discs and then let the search run in the background, but it never seemed to work that way -- always paused after each disc entry for the L-O-N-G-E-S-T time before accepting the next entry.

I'd be interested in hearing (OK, reading) about your experience with the input to the program you are using. Was it the "brute force" method, or does that program have convenience/labor saving features that actually work?

Good question David! I (like Burke and many others I'm sure) have just used good "old" memory. I have been considering (for sometime actually) to find a better way to catagorize them.

How do you like CD Tracker so far?

I've been using "delicious library" for MACs to track dvd's, cd's, books, video games....you can even use a camera to read the titles via the upc symbol. Very nice!!

It's okay. Not great, but okay. It has the benefit of being a "remote" data warehouse so that if something bad happens (i.e. Kevin's tragedy) I have a current list of media readily available for my insurance agent. There's no imaging capability other than following an individual URL to a site with album covers (i.e. Allmusic). But you can track studio, release date, pricing, purchase date, comments, etc. I've got over 600 titles catalogued and it's quite fast at recalling the information. If I had to rate it, I'd give it :25: out of :5:.

P.S. I haven't played around with the export functionality. Importing is available from a text list of Artist/Title.

Does CD Tracker allow for SACDs to be designated as such or does it just list titles? I've got around 500 total titles and almost 100 of those are SACD.

The link in my signature for My Hi Rez music tracks Games, Movies, Music Lawnmowers and your meals.... Well ok maybe no the meals, but it does seem to track a lot of stuff. I have found that it doesnt have dual disk yet and there are a couple obscure SACD's I have that it hasnt had, but thats all I have used it for so I can not comment on traditional CD's or movies. It's Guzzlefish.com if your interested. I do like how it breaks down the disks by genre and assigns a value to the collection. I also like being able to rate the disks, although that would be very time consuming if you were uploading a lot of stuff at once....like a CD library.
                              IMO

Todd, no it doesn't distinguish. There is a general field you can store any textual data in, or you could put "SACD" or "DVD-A" in the album title field after the actual title.

Delicious Library (for Mac) is pretty slick. It can scan the disks' bar code with a regular webcam, and then look up the details for you. :T

I have used collectorz.com movie and book software and both worked as advertised. I typed in the barcode because I didnt have a scanner but it worked very well for me. I tested out the music software and it seemed to work ok. It pulled up some obscure jazz cd I had. Basicaly for movies if IMDB or amazon has it then it will work just fine. For books it scans amazon and barnes & noble. You can select different sites to search but the default ones worked fine for me. I would give it a shot but I wouldn't recommend it for dial up users.
