Polyhymnia recordings for Pentatone, Avie, and Telarc

Recently, the best multichannel SACD discs in my collection have come from Avie, Pentatone, and Telarc, and most were recorded by Polyhymnia, a company headed up by recording engineer Everett Porter. The latest and perhaps best recording in this group is a disc from Avie of Handel arias by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, an amazing, wonderful mezzo who I heard live with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fransisco Symphony doing Mahler's 2nd.

Another wonderful recent disc, though not involving Polyhymnia, is Jarvi's Pentatone recording of Stravinsky chamber music with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra: A Soldier's Tale, Dumbarton Oaks, Symphony in D, etc. I think this one was recorded by Tritonus, if memory serves. The recording is drier than the Polyhymnia recordings I've heard, but wonderful nonetheless.

So, while Sony seems to have largely abandoned SACD, other lables are putting out great recordings using this medium.

By the way, here is an interesting account of one Polyhymnia recording session: http://www.sa-cd.net/shownews.php?news=20
