    Show us your vinyl rig(s)

    Hi

As the interest in vinyl playback is increasing, showing your rig(s) may inspire others that are tempted to start them self in this area..

    My rigs

By "accident" I started playing vinyl again after more than 12 years since I played the last record. In the very short amount of time that have passed since I must admit that I am enjoying music again in a very different way compared to what CD's and even high res files can give me. So much that I now own 4 record players..

anyway - here are a couple of them.

First one is a Michell Gyrodec SE with a SME V arm.

The second one is a mix of several ones that I put together. However the main parts are a Pro-Ject turntable:

My vinyl playback workhorse for the past 23 ½ years has been my Denon DP-59L, currently outfitted with an Audio-Technica AT33EV moving coil cartridge.

I've seen mint DP-59Ls fetch as much as $1,900 on eBay. There is a new in open box unit that has been listed on eBay for a while at $2,800 buy-it-now. I think that asking price is a little ambitious. If I were the seller, I would bring it down several hundred dollars,

                V nice, Face!
Ok, I'll give it a go.
Custom MDF plinth with natural wood veneer.
                Glass plater.
                Belt drive.
                Rega RB300 arm.

If I score less than 50%, I may loose what little credibility I have. ops:

                  Very good!

It "was" a NAD 533(Rega P2), I laminated 3" of Baltic Birch to the bottom of the plinth, veneered it with Ribbon Mahogany, glass platter, RB301, upgraded motor/PS, and a few other tweaks. It now weighs in at close to 30lbs. 8O

Ok, I should have guessed the BB Ply knowing of your speaker building prowess, and the RB301........I just plain missed that.

Did you upgrade the arm wire?

I left the arm wire stock, for now at least. I forgot to mention, it also has a Groove Tracer sub platter and Rega white belt.

The Rega's are known for there very light chassis, and lively performance. Lots of PRaT.
How did the major increase in mass, along with the other mods, effect the sound?

Lively is a good word for it. The table was a little forward sounding before the mods, but was fine with a warm cart such as the Shure 97x. The biggest problem was that it was very susceptible to vibration from someone walking through the room, heavy bass tracks, loud SPL's, etc... Now there is no feedback through the table and it's very neutral. It also forced me to swap out my old Shure 97x to an AT 440ML as the 97x was a tad too warm after the mods.

Interesting! Glad to hear you are happy with the results. It sure is a beautiful looking table!

BTW, I use an AT150MLX Cartridge in my system. Most say they are far too bright, but it integrates well with my system’s synergy.

Thanks Bill, I'll keep that one in mind when it's time to upgrade the cart again.

The tracking is stellar, this thing fears no artillery flak. It laughs its evil laugh at my Telarc pressing of the 1812 Overture at 95 dB. Inner groove distortion is quelled with an iron fist around the neck of any LP. I especially appreciated that fact when spinning Classical music with its preponderance of climatic passages occurring at the end of the album. And the fine-line stylus seems to nearly always find the undamaged groove root on used vinyl.

On the down side, massed strings can at times seem a bit congested.
And, if you have a system that leans up in the slightest bit, it probably will not be pleasing tonally.
