One isn't inherently better than the other but good coaxial cables tend to be more affordable than good optical cables. In other word for the same amount of money you're likely to get a better coax cable. They both have their physical bennefits, coaxial is more durable but optical is unnafected by ground loops or RF interference.
If you're looking for a good digital coax at an (relatively) affordable price, check out this thread:

Thats wierd when I was looking at cables it seemed you could spend much more $$ on coax as the most expensive optical was around $80 or $90 but I seen coax up to $700 RichOriginally posted by aud19In other word for the same amount of money you're likely to get a better coax cable.Jason- Bottom

I I use both Optical and Coax cables, and I myself cannot hear a difference between them. With the coax you get much more durability, where as the optical, is alot more fragile. If you move your equipment alot, and or always reconnecting equipment IMO the coax would be the better option, because it can take more of a beating.Jason- Bottom

I'm not saying there aren't stratosphercally priced coax's (and opticals) but for a given amount of money your likely to get a better cable IMO. Cat Cables Silver Coax would be a good example. Besides I consider glass optical cables as good cables. Most of the moderately priced optical cables you'll see use plastic.Originally posted by rich0372Thats wierd when I was looking at cables it seemed you could spend much more $$ on coax as the most expensive optical was around $80 or $90 but I seen coax up to $700 Rich

by bambahtg9700So my DVD player has both of these options for audio out. I'm sort of forced to use the Digital Coaxial over the Optical audio out because my receiver does not have any more Optical inputs left.
Is there any sound quality differences between the two? It seems like a digital coax would...-

by aud19I'm mostly looking for an answer from Andrew (or anyone else for that matter with Rotel gear and a Denon 1600 DVD player) but other opinions etc are welcome
The Denon 1600 only has an optical output (no coax
) for a digital connection. As such I'm wondering what people have preffered...

by bigburnerDoes anyone know of a DVD player that outputs a 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz audio stream from its digital coax / optical ports?
Can anyone tell me what regulation or law or agreement prevents manufacturers of DVD players from implementing this feature?
Nigel.-
