Benchmark Audio On Balanced VS Unbalanced Analog Interfaces

I found this link while reading a thread on another forum and found it very interesting. Anyone have any comments, agreements or disagreements with it?

Balanced VS Unbalanced Analog Interfaces April 23, 2018

I did start searching specs on popular dacs and most seemed to be using consumer grade balanced outputs which isn't surprising. Would we even be able to hear the difference is my question.

    Some differences are apparent...

That very much depends on the rest of your system. Also, it depends on the intrinsic S/N of the source DAC.

In my experience, standard preamps are one of the main choke points for system S/N and distortion, and operating them with amplifiers using 1-1.5V input sensitivity is an additional contributor to dynamic range issues.

In my own system, I follow similar professional practicers such as Benchmark recommends.

Let's compare a recent well regarded consumer product from Schitt, against Benchmark's own power amplifier.

The Vidar has a "balanced" input which like some older Aragon Palladiums is just a way to convert an amplifier into a balanced bridge output, and will generally not have the noise rejection of a true professional balanced input- but it does convert the amplifier into a high power mono configuration.

I have some fondness for the thinking of Pass Labs and their "First Watt" thinking, so I tend to pay a lot of attention to how that watt looks, as regards S/N, distortion, all of which determine the true dynamic range and resolution.

Do note that the scales are different for the plotted graphs...

Can you hear the difference? Possibly in some systems... but also, possibly there are other factors revealed in more complex testing. But the distortion minima for the Benchmark is over an order of magnitude (10X) lower than for the Vidar. This reflects an intrinsically lower noise floor, as well as high linearity.

Connecting balanced pre-amp to unbalanced amp
      by toledoguy
I've got a question, and I think I know the answer, but what the heck. I have decided to spend some money to move from big box store mediocre equipment to higher end seperates. It's a slow process as I research everything that I possibly can before I buy. I have a Rotel RM-1050 to power the front...

      2200 switch balanced to unbalanced?

Is there a way to program the remote to switch a 2200 between balanced an unbalanced mode?

Reason, i use another brand pre for multichannel which is connected unbalanced, (turns on fine with trigger) and the CP-500 for 2channel listening, now i turn off the 2200, crawl to the floor and...

      RB 1090/RC 1090 balanced and unbalanced ?
      by sonicbaer
      Hello

I hope someone can answer a couple of questions regarding the RC 1090 and the RB 1090 balanced connection switch...

What does the switch do ? why does the manual say that both balanced and unbalance connections should not be used at the same time ?

Some new Schitt in power amplifiers... the Vidar
      by JonMarsh

The Vidar was announced back in late 2016, but has just begun shipping- the same week that the first Tesla Model 3's go to owners. While I wouldn't claim that the importance or impact of these events on the world at large is equivalent, it just might be that it is that important...

You know, sometimes you know right away good things are happening. In this case, there is no mystery... I've seen the other reviews... I've seen John Atkinson's measurements on Stereophile...
