Friday night, I stopped by John DeVore's Monkeyhaus event to listen to the prototype speakers that will replace his Super Gibbon 8 speakers. The wood he used is bamboo, and the finish of the speakers in the pic (1 of 3) is called "mink". It looked stunning, and sounded superb. I believe he will be taking them to the RMAF later this month.
Another highlight was the amplification by a company called Line Magnetic. I had never heard about them, so I was intrigued. Jonathan Halpern from Tone Imports just got them in. The big amp was a monster. About 130lbs or so. Now, everything about the various amps & integrateds by Line Magnetic was top shelf. The look, the build quality, the sound - everything. What should be of note is that Line Magnetic is a Chinese company. I think we are witnessing the turn of the tide with hifi in China, just like Japan in the past. If they slapped a 'Made in Germany' label on these amps, no one would think twice about it, and we would be talking about superb German engineering and build quality. Perhaps, this is a glimpse of what the future holds for China and hifi. If so, I say bring it on.
