Dan D'Agostino - new company - new amplifier

I found this while browsing: http://www.dagostinoinc.com/

    The Momentum monoblock amplifier:

    Power
    8Ω 300 watts
    4Ω 600 watts
    2Ω 1,200 watts

Some unique features of the Momentum Amplifier are a Breguet watch inspired illuminated front power meter with Dan D’Agostino’s signature, 28 high-output transistors that run at a blistering 69 MHz and the first copper heat sinks used in a production amplifier.

    Cost: $42 000 per pair

    Yikes!

Wow....that's the most gorgeous amp I've ever seen! Performance likely isn't anywhere near what it's price is at.

Thanks, RebelMan. I must say that it was quite a surprise find. Dan's focus was always amplification. Great to know that he's living his passion ... but the price ... Yowie!!!

              Billet 6061 aluminum.......
Ayre has been doing that for a while.
              And for good reason.

Now that's sexy. And at $42K it should be.

Funny how copper is highlighted as a feature. We (the IT industry) have been using copper for cooling in servers for many years and never once have I seen it being highlighted as a feature.
I also crack a smile when I hear military grade aluminum being mentioned. For any people spending time in the military you would know that it is lowest possible bidder and nothing else..

Pretty much anything Government related is like that. This amp needs a few exposed tubes and you got a ultra expensive Cyberpunk toy.

Grades of aluminum are standardized by the ASTM. The quality & properties of aluminum can vary greatly. Aircraft grade is often quoted in marketing & advertizing. It is one of the strongest and more expensive grades and must meet specific element content requirements established by the ASTM for the specified alloy. The thermal characteristics of aluminum are fairly equivalent from one grade to the next. A heat sink could be made from a low grade, soft architectural aluminum & still be as thermally effective as one machined from a high quality aircraft grade such as a 6000 or 7000 series. The mechanical properties of the higher grade aluminums make them more desirable for use as a chassis in an electronic device.

AFA military/government products, the company I work for makes components for gas masks for the US military. Yes, we must bid low enough to get the contract, but the type and quality of the aluminum we must use is specified in the contract. We are required to submit chemical & mechanical test certifications from the foundry where the aluminum was made with every shipment of product as proof that a substandard material was not used. Peoples lives depend on the quality of these components, it's a responsibility we do not take lightly.

IMHO mass market companies like Bose and others are constantly sugar coating their advertizing with superfluous information & supposed ‘scientific’ claims. In this case, the price alone is enough to establish the level of quality and performance. This is a niche market and ‘normal’ marketing techniques are less effective to the potential consumer of a product in this category.

                        As always, JMHO

                          >>Momentum's chassis is machined from solid aluminum billet, not stamped from sheet metal, so it is non-resonant<< What is it about a machined billet chassis that stops it from resonating?

Think of the stamped metal chassis made from roughly .060 to .094 inch thick material typically found on most consumer electronics as a fabric flag. Hoist the flag up the pole on a day with a mild breeze and watch as it ripples and flaps in the slightest bit of wind.

Now replace the fabric flag with a stiff board having the same basic shape and you see that the board maintains its shape & stays flat, regardless of wind speed.

Another example might be to take a 1 foot square piece of steel that is 1/8 inch thick and tap it with a small hammer. It will ‘ring’ like a bell to some extent. Take a piece of Corian or MDF (medium density fiberboard) with the same dimensions and when hit with the same hammer there will be less ringing from the Corian and MDF. The different materials have different inherent resonances. Materials that have low resonance act like shock absorbers and transmit less physical energy from the surrounding environment to whatever they are supporting.

Large sums of money are spent on ‘Audiophile’ products that isolate equipment from vibration. I will let you do your own research to decide as to whether or not it is an effective method for obtaining discernable improvement in sound quality.

It's pretty girly looking alright! I swear, the heatsinks must be finished in nail polish and I'll bet the meter doubles as a compact. :P
