Hmm. You have a CD player, an analog multichannel receiver and a pair of speakers. What are you looking to achieve?

You mention, "mostly at low levels". Since orchestral music is pretty loud when heard live, does that mean you play it at low levels so not to disturb others?

If so, I would suggest a good headphone amp and headphone. That way you can listen at any volume.

im looking at this reciever, and it is rated at 5x125w. in the manual, it says for stereo:

Stock sound good enough for speaker design?
          by joecarrow
This just in: the stock sound chip on my Thinkpad T60 is starting to make me think that it might have what it takes to design speakers. I loaded Arta, and these are the promising points I found:

-Flat response between 100 hz and 10 khz
-THD of 0.015% in this range
          -THD+noise...

          headphone output - noobie question
          by JonJeffman
          Hey,
Not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but if a piece of equipment doesn't advertise it as having a headphone amp, are all the headphone outputs the same (i.e. like a line out or something)?

I was looking at buying some Sennheiser HD650's and read that they really need...

Clean and inexpensive- Cambridge Audio 651W Power Amplifier

The Cambridge Audio 651W is now my new go-to amplifier for small and portable for speaker measurements. I got spoiled by the Benchmark AHB2- the 651W isn't truly an AHB2 replacement, but it's as close as you have any right to expect...

a/v receivers, about $400... and THD?
          by palmetto
i am chooing between the sony STR DA1000ES a/v receiver and the pioneer elite VSX-41. both are discounted to about $400 and have features that i require (such as 100+W and A/B speaker switching). both have relatively handsome design suitable to the room. 2.1 channel music is 80%, 3.1 ht 20%.
