    Pre/Pro Question

    Hey guys,

I currently have a Denon 2309ci powering a B&W 685 HT setup. I'm considering an upgrade to separates. Without starting a new "who makes the best stuff" thread my question is:

Which component, the pre-amp or the amplifier itself, has more influence on the sound? Or more accurately, which has less in order to produce a more natural representation of the recording?

Unfortunately, my naivete didn't realize the lack of pre-outs on the Denon and so if I go this route I'll be purchasing both componets.

    I appreciate any responses,
    Mike

I would have to say the pre amp. Since the pre is where all points meet, it better be the strongest point in the chain.

The pre amp is nothing but a switching box. The sign of a good pre is that it is transparent and adds nothing to the sound.

An amp by adding more watts may produce a more desirable sound by simply increasing the db's without distortion.

Help with using Pre-Outs from my receiver
        by timetohunt
I was lucky enough to get a nice set of front speakers as a gift from my wife with some expendable funds she had (Klipsche RF-83s). She paid about $2200 for the new pair, and a nice new 350watt Klipsche Sub for about $650. I was thinking about buying used but seized the opportunity while she was still...

Amp/Pre overkill for 703 based system?
        by KRC
I am upgrading out of an AV receiver and would want to make a sizeable quality jump, I am considering Classe SSP 300 and CA 5100. I am currently running 703's L/R, LCR 60, 600 S3 for surround and ASW 600. A modest system but sounds very good in stereo, but I want the nth degree, however with HT there...

New receivers, where have all the pre-outs gone for separate amplifiers?
        by Lex
I was just curious what was out there, and I started looking, and have found that the combo receiver that gives you amplification choices, seems to have been eliminated by audio manufacturers. How's that for sucking a$$??? :M

I know you can get a pre-pro of course, but let's face...
