Check out the Marantz av8003 and the Integra DTR9.9. There really isn't anything else. You could check out NAD T157HD which was just upgraded but I have no experience with it. Then there is Rotel rsp1570 which in my opinion is a problem. A lot of people are having problems with it. I was all in until I heard the news.

The only one out of all these that is solid is the Integra but it's not the best sounding depending on what you are doing with it.
The marantz is the best cd playback pre but it has some Processor issues with DD and DTS HD MA with Auto calibration.
Check out the forums over at AVS and you can read all about it.

As far as a strong Receiver, the mighty Pioneer ELite sc05/07 and the big dog sc09 are the amount the best in the business. I personally love these receivers and they sound so damn good. They sport Wolfson Dac's and a list of excellent features. Ice amps the whole nine yards.

Then I must be imagining it. I didn't see anything about a multichannel processor on that site that did anything really useful.

I would look at rotel, or the Classe SSP 300 if you are more into music and have a good player to decode the formats and send out via analog.

For processor only, and "IF" you want to buy used, you have an extremely large pool to buy from.

What is "BEST" is very subjective as each of us perceives the sound qualities of each company differently. I would set my price range, which you seem to have done, then look at features and find your unit.

And as someone else pointed out here, if looking for DVD/BR playback, consider a source player that does all the decoding and just look for a unit that has analog pass-through. From my listening tests a bit back, even pass-through imparts some sonic signature, so again you need to listen if possible and find the one you like.

For the pool of used equipment you have: Sunfire, Krell, NAD, Arcam, B&K, Lexicon, Meridian, Cary, Sherwood, Rotel, Classe, and on an on. Lots of good selection and choices - within your stated price range.

Buying new the lists goes down significantly....
