    Holiday Gift Ideas

Out of your entire music collection, what CD, Record or DVD would you give as an educational gift to the uninitiated?

You know the type. Only listens to the soft rock station, never varies, but would be open to some great lesser known stuff?

          X

Well I highly recommend this CD ( see my avitar ):

X Live at the Wisky A Go Go on the Fabulous Sunset Strip

This DVD documentary about the band X is as thoughtful and interesting, as it is musical. This isn't your run of the mill punk band - they actually sound like real music. And, there very good IMO.

          X - The Unheard Music

Keeping on the same theme I stumbled on this Christmas CD. No relation to the X band, just various artists. I've never heard it though. :B

Eric, I'd give them two DVDs - the Cowboy Junkies one and the Joe Bonamassa one. The Cowboy Junkies are as laid back as a chaise longue and Joe Bonamassa is hot burning blues lava.

Nigel has a point there with those DVD's. No one would dislike them. Same with Dire Straits and Miles Davis. I'll have to check out X.

First would be the Gene Harris QuartetListen Up’

I recommend the SACD version of this one, too. For some reason, even the Red Book layer has exceptional sound quality. I have yet to have anyone not fall in love with this CD, regardless of the genre of music they generally prefer. Gene Harris’s soulful, blues style of piano along with the rest of a V tight rhythm section sound as if only one being is responsible for all the notes, and make this one uniquely appealing to all who hear it.

Second would be anything from Citizen Cope (aka Clarence Greenwood).

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Washington, DC, Citizen Cope blends many genres of music, such as folk, blues, reggae, hip hop, rock, and R&B. His style is uniquely identifiable and all his own, both when performing solo or with his band. His lyrics are a gen Z type of ‘Beatnik’ prose, and accessible to nearly everyone in their ability to draw you in and make you feel exactly what he is feeling. I will cautiously compare him to Jim Morrison in terms of his craft as a poet of his generation.
