The Cambridge Azur 840C at $1,375 is in your budget range.

It doesn't play SACDs, though (it will play the hybrid redbook layer, of course).

I still think the Oppo 980H with a good outboard DAC like the Benchmark DAC1 is hard to beat, unless you go used for something more high-end like a Marantz SA-11 (which is still going to be ~$2000.00) or a modded Sony SCD-777ES.

I think[?] the Marantz SA8001 @ under a grand keeps it DSD native to the analog outputs. :T

              Harry,

Back to tubes, have you tried anything from SHANLING,or ESOTERIC
I dont know the prices of any,but since I live in australia, depending on where you are situated you might be able to get one around your dollar.

My humble Marantz DV6400 keeps it DSD native to the analogue outputs, so if that is the main concern, its current equivalent should do the same (DV6600?--haven't kept up with the more recent models).

                    Modded Sony DVP 9000ES

Buy a used 9000 ES. Thousands were sold at $1500 but they are $325 used only 7 years later. Very good build. Sounds great as is. Have Vacuum state mod it to level 6 for about $1700 at your conveniece. Now you have a $10K plus unit that kills all competition up to that price point. Warranty 5 years parts and labor. That's what I did and WOW WOW!!!

A used Shanling SCD-T200 can be had for under $1500. I've heard good things about this one.

Unless Santa comes early, I do not think you could score an Esoteric for your budget.
