What do you keep coming back to?

In my quest to expand my musical vocabulary, I ask all of you this...

What record keeps you coming back? Not recently, but always.

What record always satisfies, never lets you down, always has your back, and is generally the record you love above most people?

It doesn't have to be the best record you have ever heard, but the one that means the most to you.

Oh, and could you tell me why? I'm intersted. I want some new tunes!

The one that always gets played and brings back memories is "Pink Floyd...The Wall". Brings back the old bush parties in BC, the first real girl friend, first vehicle ('78 Pinto)ouch!. Just an all around care free time that I'm sure we all go through at that age. It was a lot of fun and the album still gets a lot of play. Know it word for word and never get tired of it. :T

I can't just keep it to one. Here's my minimum group of rock I'd have to have with me at all times:

Alan Parsons Project - I, Robot
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Don Hendley - The End Of The Innocence
Doobie Brothers - The Captain And Me
      Eagles - Hotel California
      Eric Clapton - Journeyman
Genesis - And Then There Were Three. . . .
Grand Funk Railroad - We're An American Band
      Led Zeppelin - IV
      Mission U.K. - Children
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
      Queensryche - Empire
Richie Sambora - Stranger In This Town
Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs
      Styx - The Grand Illusion
      U2 - The Joshua Tree
      .

Harry Chapin - "Greatest Stories Live" One of the greatest story telling musicians just happened to be one of the greatest humanitarians of our time, it's sad that his life was cut short, almost 26 years ago. First saw Harry his dad and brothers in concert, Greenich Village....1969 and dozens of times after that never being dissapointed !

Harry Chapin... I'm gonna check that one out.

Okay, here's mine, going through my collection:

David Beegle - A Year Closer
              Garth Brooks - Greatest Hits
Neil Diamond - Glory Road (2 disc compilation)
              Neil Diamond - Moods
Phil Driscoll - I Exalt Thee
Melissa Ethridge - Yes I Am
              Evanescence - Fallen
Hanson - Mmmm Bop (just kidding)
Indigo Girls - 1200 Curfews (2 disc compilation)
Jars of Clay - Self Titled
Billy Joel - 4 disc compilation set
              Elton John - Australia Live
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction (mostly just "Symphony of Destruction")
Megadeth - Cryptic Writings (mostly "Trust", "Almost Honest", "A Secret Place")
Old River Road - Somewhere In Between (a local garage folk band that should have made it big)
Simon and Garfunkel - Greatest Hits
              U2 - The Joshua Tree
Van Halen - Live: Right Here Right Now (2 disc compilation)
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

Whenver I go on long trips or long drives, these are almost always the discs that end up in my CD case that I bring with me. (this thread made me look through my stash, though, reminding me that there's a lot of old albums I need to listen to again)

If I had to pick just one... it would be Rubber Soul by The Beatles. It was one of the first LPs I bought back in the sixties (in mono I might add). I've owned the recording on LP, 8-track, and CD.

It's interesting to note that the Rubber Soul CD does not contain the same songs that were on the LP. When the CDs were authored, the record company moved a lot of materal around (from the same time period) in an effort to "fill up" a CD. They managed to give the buyer more value, but disrupted the order that the artist may have intended.

I've even gone so far in recent years to take my Beatles CDs and re-burn them with the correct titles and song order to match the U.S. Capital and Apple LPs.

That's very cool knowledge you just dropped on me. No one can blame you for picking a Beatles Album... Could you list the original tracks?

                    Here ya go.

                    I've Just Seen a Face
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
                    You Won't See Me
                    Think for Yourself
                    The Word
                    Michelle
                    It's Only Love
                    Girl
                    I'm Looking Through You
                    In My Life
                    Wait
                    Run for Your Life

After years of listening to the LP this is what my brain expects to hear. I think these songs are scattered over 3 CDs. I've done the same thing for the rest of their earlier work (Second Album, Something New, Etc). I think the CDs are correct from Sgt Pepper on.

Bluespower, I'm confused. I own Rubber Soul on vinyl in stereo, on the Parlophone label, manufactured by the EMI Company, PCSM 3075, dated 1965, with the attached picture on the cover (with Rubber Soul in red, not green), and the song list is:

                      1. Drive My Car
                      2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
                      3. You Won't See Me
                      4. Nowhere Man
                      5. Think For Yourself
                      6. The Word
                      7. Michelle
                      8. What Goes On
                      9. Girl
                      10. I'm Looking Through You
                      11. In My Life
                      12. Wait
                      13. If I Needed Someone
                      14. Run For Your Life

I'll have to research this further.

                      Nigel.

                      PS. Good choice!

"The White Album" by The Beatles

I have this on vinyl. I bought it in London in 1976, which is well after it was recorded, so I hope Bluespower doesn't tell me that some songs are missing or in the wrong order!

                          Interesting.

My Rubber Soul is a Capital/EMI release numbered T 2442 (same picture but brown lettering).

Some of the songs you have listed appear on my copy of "yesterday"...and Today (Capital/EMI # ST 2553). That track list is:

                          Drive My Car
                          I'm Only Sleeping
                          Nowhere Man
                          Dr. Robert
                          Yesterday
                          Act Naturally
                          And Your Bird Can Sing
                          If I needed Someone
                          We Can Work It Out
                          What Goes on?
                          Day Tripper

I guess I'll have to amend my statement about "what the artist intended" to "what I grew up listening to" (in my market).

The first White album I bought on CD actually had a German opera recorded on the discs even though the discs were printed with the Beatles song list.

Oscar Peterson keeps me coming back

Oscar Peterson did a double CD live "Live in Paris" that keeps me playing it over and over. The track "Kellys Blues" is just remarkable, you can really tell how he gets into playing live by how much you can hear him chanting to himself as he plays. It is an album that sends me to that sweat spot in my mind. peaceful and relaxed.

The chanting is the reason I like his studio work more than his live stuff. I can't get used to it as part of the music.

But you're right, it is a great CD.

I'll take Night Train over it only to avoid the chanting.

Ok guys, I need you to both list the tracks on your copies of the Rolling Stones Flowers album.

Actually, it wasn't craftiness so much as plain greed. They scalped some of the songs off Rubber Soul, Revolver, etc. and made another album out of them to charge you for. I remember doing a "WTF" when I bought the UK imports in high school to replace my Capitol releases and there were NEW SONGS on them.

I still have all my Parlophone/Apple vinyl Beatles albums, and am really looking forward to listening to them when I get a new TT in a couple months (finally).

For me, the albums that I always go back to are:

                                        Tommy
                                        White Album
                                        Close to the Edge

In a previous post I identified one album that I've come back to time and time again. Below are a dozen that I never seem to tire of:

                                            Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
                                            Steely Dan - Aja
Diana Krall - All For You

                                            Jimmy Smith - Home Cookin'

The Beatles discussion got me thinking about the best Rock And Roll band in the world. The Rolling Stones. ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x( ;x(

About two years ago after getting a SACD player, and when Tower records still had a SACD section, I bought "Let it Bleed", a SACD by ABKCO. There was no indication on the packaging that this was a SACD other than a sticker on the plastic wrapper. I eventually realized that all of the Rolling Stone recordings by ABKCO were hybrid SACDs. In the SACD section at Tower they were $21.00. In The reglar CD section, no sticker on the plastic wrap, I think they were $12. I bought every one I could find.

These recordings are just 2 channel but are the best quality recordings of the Stones I've ever owned. I've always thought that the Stones have been plagued by horrible recordings, so finding this quality at this price was a double boner. I'm listening now to "Hot Rocks 1964-1971" not on my SACD player but my Jolida JD 100.

I've never been as lucky to have a double boner.

Favorite Stones song... and I know this will be controversial...

My favorite 'Stones song is Heartbreaker (AKA Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo), from Goats Head Soup.

I had to go back and add Robin Trower's Bridge Of Sighs to my list of essential rock albums.

Sometimes I forget the obvious. Today, with the player on random, The Band's self titled album came on, and Lookout Cleveland, I got to hear some of my favorite songs of all time play on my new system. Hooray. Whoopee.

I hope this thrill stuff never stops. I gotta figure out what my next big upgrade should be so I can relive the wows I already have had
Hello, my name is Eric and I am a music addict.

                                                              Speaking of 'obvious'.....

Mr. B's 9th would hard to live without on a desert island.

                                                              And Mahler's 1st isn’t too bad, either.

Keith Jarrett " The Koln Concert " recorded live at the Opera House in Koln, Germany in 1975. I owned the LP, I owned the tape and I now own the CD.
Keith Jarrett is a true musical genius. Unfortunately, a great deal of his music is so abstract as to be very difficult to appreciate, or listen to, but occasionally he creates a recording that we mortals can understand and feel. When he does, it's food from the Gods.
