Rammstein ' Live Aus Berlin'

This dvd was brought to my attention from a similar forum in Australia.The guy who was recommending it was mainly a jazz fan but to quote him"but good is good"and he was raving about this dvd.
Others then joined in and saying how impressive the live show was and how foot tapping great the music was.Described as Techno Metal,the best way for me to describe them is a cross between Metallica and Human League
I had never heard of any of their stuff, but have always had a leaning to the heavier side of music,so thought it was definitely worth a gamble in buying it.
Well,it is fantastic! Have listened to only about half of the dvd as yet due to complaints from my 10 yr who kept coming in telling me she couldnt get to sleep.This needs to be played LOUD so I am waiting for wife and kids to be out of the house so I can really crank it.
Incredible driving bass lines really make it hard not to get the feet tapping.Even the 41 yr old head and neck sprung to life and wanted to join in! :twisted:
The only thing that detracted from the dvd was that it is sung in German and didnt have a clue what they were singing about.But dont let that deter you,sound quality is top notch[5.1] and PQ is decent.

Ben Folds and WASO (Western Australian Symphony Orchestra)

It's beautiful.

All the songs were arranged by musicians living in Perth and Mr. Folds takes great care to stress this fact and encourage the auidence to continue it's support of the Orchestra. Highlights include almost every song.

Nigel, you're going to like this one if you haven't already seen it.

Eric, the reviews of this DVD make interesting reading. I hadn't even heard of Ben Folds (it's my sheltered life you know) but it sounds like I should have.

I watched Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama: Live at the Apollo again last night with friends and it's definitely now in my Top 10 DVDs. A beautiful concert performed by musicians who respect each other enormously and really want to be out there performing. Too often I watch concerts where the artists are just going through the motions. Not this one. A 'must buy' in my opinion. I have another friend coming around at 5pm today to see it. I can't wait. It's having the same effect on me as the Ben Folds one is having on you Eric.

The Carter Family - Will the Circle Be Unbroken (2005)

I watched this at a friend's place a couple of nights ago. We're both interested in exploring the roots of modern music, and this documentary traces the lives and music of country musicians AP, Sara and Maybelle Carter during the 1920's, 30's and 40's.

Some of you will recognise the name June Carter from the film "Walk the Line". June - one of AP and Sara's daughters (I think) - is the woman that Johnny Cash married.

I wouldn't buy this DVD unless you're a real enthusiast.

10cc are more pop than rock, but their songs are well crafted and that's the real strength of the band.

This would be a good DVD to watch with your wife/girlfriend or with friends who aren't hard-out music followers.

I'm sure that you would recognise some of the songs, in particular "I'm Not in Love", "Wall Street Shuffle", "Rubber Bullets" and "Art for Art's Sake". Many a gal has melted listening to "I'm Not in Love".

You must get out and listen to more music Eric. You obviously spend too much time bailing your dodgy mates out of gaol.

Have you watched the Eric Clapton "Live in Hyde Park" DVD, recorded in 1996? If you enjoyed "Live at Montreux 1986" then I think you'll enjoy this one too. I rate it a lot higher than Montreux, but then again I prefer the more blues-oriented set list on Hyde Park and you may not.

I watched a DVD on a Bass Day Workshop/Concert the other day that had the chance to be amazing and through shoddy recording and camera work fell flat on it's face. With the likes of Victor Wooten participating, you would think that Bass Magazine would have done better with this. Thank God for netflix, because I did not have to buy it to find this out.

I did learn some interesting things about how to attack my Fender P though.

I would only recommend this to bass players.

So I took everyones advice and bought this DVD... Watched it two weeks ago and again this week, it's spoiled me for a lot of other DVD's. Has to be my favorite as well now.

Fretted. In the DVD Victor Wooten gives a lesson on what he is doing. It's only about a three minute lesson, but it gave me something I can practice for months.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold (2005)

Beautiful!

This concert is a very personal statement from Neil Young, performed soon after he had recovered from surgery for a brain aneurysm.

There are lots of good concerts out there, performed professionally by talented musicians. Then there are rare occasions when the concert really means something to the artist and the audience. This is one of those occasions.

The DVD was shot over two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2005. There are some nice touches - for example, on one song Neil plays a guitar once owned by Hank Williams, which was last played by Hank at the Ryman 31 years ago.

I watched this DVD with my wife. She actually bought it for me. When the song "Heart of Gold" came on we got up and danced. The band was rocking.

This DVD is also a technical masterpiece, in particular the way it was filmed. I wish all music DVD directors would watch it and learn.

Just when you think that there can't possibly be another DVD out there that will amaze you, one comes along and does just that.

Asleep at the Wheel - In Concert (2003)

Western Swing is the genre of music on this DVD.

Western Swing is a fusion of country, rock and roll, pop, boogie-woogie and blues. It is music that has been written for dancing. It has a South-western US flavour with elements of New Orleans thrown in.

Western Swing was at its peak in the 1940s and 50s. I cannot understand why it has been largely forgotten because it’s great music. Asleep at the Wheel are probably the best practitioners of the genre currently playing.

This concert was recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in 2000 for the Ohne Filter - Musik Pur television show. (Ohne Filter - Musik Pur means "Without Filter - Sheer, Unadulterated Music"). Usually you see a lot of cowboy hats at Asleep at the Wheel concerts, but not at this one. Actually, ever since Brokeback Mountain maybe you don’t see them at US concerts either. Anyone out there like to comment?

The current band has 7 members, and all of them are excellent musicians. More than 80 musicians have been a part of Asleep at the Wheel since the band first started in 1970.

The best known composer of Western Swing music is probably Bob Wills who had a band called The Texas Playboys. Although Bob Wills died in 1975, his music lives on with bands like Asleep at the Wheel who play a number of his songs at this concert.

This particular concert has a decidedly Texan feel to it. Can you tell from the following set list?

The Willie Nelson Special - With Special Guest Ray Charles (1984)

It's amazing what you can find in the DVD bargain bin at your discount store. This one cost me about US$7.

The concert was recorded at the Austin Opera House in 1984. It's an hour long and contains about 20 minutes of absolute magic, which is the amount of time that Ray is on stage with Willie. I like the rest of the concert too - it's just that the chemistry between those two together is so good.

Brusce Springsteen - Live in Dublin

So, I bought Brucie's latest over the weekend. I was waiting for this for a while as I was at said concert. It was from the 'We Shall Overcome' album and tour. I was a proper hoe down with banjos, fiddles, accordians... the lost and it was a real hoot. The DVD really captures the night where we had gospel, folk, blues, trad etc. It's almost a cast of thousands involved on stage and they all look as if they're having the time of their life! It's also available on Blu-ray, for those into it. I loved the album, loved the gig and loved the DVD. The only disapointing part is they didn't play live 'Froggie Went A Courtin''! That would have been hilarious....

A. R. M. S. Concert Vol. 1 (1983)

This concert was recorded in 1983 at the Royal Albert Hall in London as a charity show to collect money for multiple sclerosis and in particular for Ronnie Lane, the former bass player of The Faces, who was suffering from the disease.

In this Volume 1 Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood play various hit songs and blues classics. They are supported by a number of well known British musicians including Charlie Watts (drummer from the Rolling Stones), Bill Wyman (bass guitarist from the Rolling Stones), Andy Fairweather-Low (guitarist and long time member of Eric Clapton's band), and Kenney Jones (drummer from The Who).

The PQ and SQ are pretty ordinary but I didn't mind as it was a good concert. The highlight for me was the blues number "Ramblin' On My Mind" which the band performed in 5 different keys throughout the song.

For some reason this DVD was manufactured in Brazil. That's why the cover looks so strange.

So all that talk about Wilco on the CD thread made me did out I am Trying To Break Your Heart, the DVD about the making, releasing, and turmoil of makinhg YHF. It's a look into the life of a great band at the moment that are most famous for.

Pretty cool stuff.

Then I watched Sunken Treasures and had a great time. Jeff Tweedy is a great solo artist as well as a frontman, and his songs obviously translate well to acoustic guitar, as I am sure almost all of them are written that way originally. There are some very amusing moments on the disc where he banters with the crowd and tells little stories.

After that I watched the DVD that came with Sky Blue Sky, which is short, but gives you a better understanding of how good a guitar player Niels Cline is.

So there you have it. The Wilco trifecta. A damn good night, if somewhat mellow.

A. R. M. S. Concert Vol. 2 (1983)

This is the second volume of the Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis (A. R. M. S.) concert that I watched recently. This volume mainly features guitarist Jeff Beck (very good) and ex Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page (awful). Jimmy looks drunk but is apparently high as a kite on heroin. He made a real mess of "Stairway to Heaven" which he played on his famous double necked guitar. Legend has it that he watched his performance on tape and decided that he had to change his ways - and he did. Not only is Jimmy Page a superb guitarist, his personal wealth today is estimated at US$150 million so obviously he's a smart guy too and didn't put all his money into his arm.

Inspired by ShadowZA's avatar I then put on this DVD again:

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris - Real Live Roadrunning (2006)

This is the second time that I've watched this DVD and I enjoyed it even more this time. It's interesting what you notice the second, third and fourth time you watch a music DVD. This time it was Emmylou's excellent harmonies and the wonderful drummer (who's name I can't remember).

After enduring the poor PQ and SQ of the A. R. M. S. Concert it's amazing how INVOLVING a DVD is when it has good PQ and SQ. I was up on stage with those guys. If you look hard you can see me; I'm far right stage at the back doing harmonies.

Very pleasant Sunday afternoon listening.

Some people rate Al as the best guitarist ever. I wouldn't go that far, but he is pretty good. He shows off a bit in the 1986 concert by playing too many fast licks, but I coped (tough as leather me).

Hi Guys, for what it's worth, my faves would have to be Eagles Farewell Tour on HD-DVD - Great PQ and the DTS soundtrack is beyond reproach. Great mastering! Being an Aussie, I was lucky enough to be at this series of concerts. Truly amazing performers and the raspy vocals of Henley just shine. In standard definition, I love 'The Dance' by Fleetwood Mac, but I have found the PQ to be a little soft. Anyone know if Warner has any plans to release this title in HD-DVD format. Would be at the top of my list. If SACD is your bag, I can thoroughly recommend Dire Straits Brothers in Arms 20th Anniversery and also Billy Joel 'An Innocent Man'. Great songs and awesome sound quality. DVD-Audio also has some great titles. Tigerlilly by Natalie Merchant is great and her ethereal voice is worth the price of admission. Great forum guys...keep up the great work!

The Blues Masters (1966)

In 1966 the Canadian television network CBC invited some of America's legendary blues artists to a Toronto studio, where they spent three days recording together and individually. The result was a one-off, black-and-white special broadcast as part of CBC's "Festival" series. 30 years later these original session tapes were found, restored, and re-released.

The main artists on this DVD are Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Sunnyland Slim, Mable Hillery, and James Cotton.

Everything on this DVD is a delight. All the tracks are excellent, but life being what it is, there has to be one downer. On this occasion it’s Canadian blues musician Colin James who provides the commentary on the DVD. Colin ruins one of the Willie Dixon songs by playing guitar and singing along with it. Why, why, why did you have to do that Colin?

Don’t let that put you off buying this DVD. I’ve watched it about 10 times over the past couple of years and every time I’m thrilled by the quality of these musicians. As I think I’ve mentioned before in this forum, Otis Spann’s version of “T’aint Nobody’s Business If I Do” is absolutely stunning. Ray Charles - O Genio - Live in Brazil 1963 (2004)

This partly wonderful DVD features Ray Charles in concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1963 when Ray was only 32 years old. He’s in his prime here and so is his backing band The Raelettes – four women including the excellent singer Margie Hendrix. They used to say that “to be a Raelette you had to let Ray” but I digress… There’s also a 15-man orchestra supporting them.

"O Genio" means "The Genius" in Portuguese, and they’re not wrong. Ray is right up at the top of the ladder when you talk about the most talented musicians of the 20th century.

This DVD is actually two concerts, the first one being the rehearsal for the second one, in front of a much smaller audience. The SQ and PQ of the first concert are really good considering its age, but for some strange reason the SQ and PQ of the second concert are inferior. In fact they're quite poor.

On track 16 in the first concert Ray leaves the piano and plays saxophone in a jazz instrumental number. I've never seen that before.

Jerry Lee Lewis – “Last Man Standing” (DVD - 2006)

This is an excellent DVD because:
* It is packed with great rock 'n' roll standards that most people know.
* The musicians are top rate.
* Jerry Lee’s interaction with his guests is absolutely fascinating.

For this concert Jerry Lee invited a variety of top-drawer artists to sing with him. However Jerry Lee is such a demanding musician that the guests had to compete with Jerry Lee to sing their songs.

This is how it works. Jerry Lee starts the song off and nods to his guest when he’s ready for the guest to take over. If the guest doesn’t make an early impact Jerry Lee simply takes the song back and leaves his guest standing there doing harmonies (or whatever) while Jerry Lee does the rest of the song.

The best example of this was Don Henley (from The Eagles) who just couldn’t get onto Jerry Lee’s wavelength and ended up wishing that the Enterprise would beam him up.

Another example was Kris Kristofferson who looked stoned and appeared not to have rehearsed his song. If looks could kill then Jerry Lee would have been charged with murder. (His nickname isn’t “The Killer” for nothing).

Other singers like Norah Jones, Tom Jones, Solomon Burke, and John Fogerty fared much better. Norah, Tom and Solomon are pros so they had no difficulty fitting in. John Fogerty looked in trouble during his first song but for his second song he delivered a stunning version of "Good Golly Miss Molly" which clearly obtained Jerry Lee’s respect.

Kid Rock went one step further. He wasn’t going to take any nonsense from old Jerry Lee so he decided to deliver his version of “Little Queenie” standing on top of Jerry Lee’s piano! Instead of being angry Jerry Lee just looked up at him in admiration. He was thinking that that’s what he would have done 50 years ago.

There was one disappointment for me. Buddy Guy – whom I rate as one of the best guitarists alive today – never got to play any decent lead. Just when I thought he was going to do a solo Ronnie Wood (from The Rolling Stones) did the lead break and Buddy played rhythm. It was a missed opportunity for sure.

By now you are probably thinking that this concert was a disaster. Well it wasn’t because of course I’m exaggerating and most people will have missed these interactions between Jerry Lee and his guests as they were quite subtle. Perhaps many years in sales have fine tuned my powers of observing people? I haven’t read a single review that makes the same observations so it could all have been in my imagination, but I don’t think so.

In case you’re wondering, Jerry Lee is 71 years old in this DVD. His piano work is faultless and his singing is more than competent. However he isn’t the firebrand that he used to be. Age does that to you.

Ahyhow, onwards. Here's a DVD I picked up recently.

The Cars Unlocked.



Altough not a huge fan, I always liked The Cars. The wrote some very catchy tracks and my older sister had their albums. This DVD was launched las year and is a real blast from the past.

While the content is good its audio and video quality is quite poor. Horrible in fact. Lots of source flaws and video artifacts. I've seen much better from that era. Audio quality is a little better. DD 5.1 was better than the PCM stereo mix. I've heard better on a cheap turntable. But I suppose for fans it's the content your after. I got all my favourites - “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “Moving in Stereo”, “Good Times Roll”, “Just What I Needed” and so on.

There were a few interviews with the band mixed in and to be honest they came across as d*cks.

All in all it could have been much better but I'm reasonably happy with the buy.
