Ok, I will have to pick up one or two of those. Speak and Spell was one of the first albums I bought with my own cash when I had absolutely no taste in music (I probably still don't but I still love music).Originally posted by Kevin DPicked up a couple of the Depeche Mode reissue's lately. They have most of their albums in a remastered CD and 5.1 surround DVD. DVDs has high-resolution PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS 96/24 mixes.
The sound on Violator is amazing, I've listened to the album 2-3 times now. That's on top of the hundreds since it's original release. Each DVD also has a 30-40 minute video discussing what was going on with the band when that album was released. I hope to pick up the rest for Christmas.

Is "never let me down again" about drugs or his boyfriend? It was only after watching a live DVD version of that song that I thought it was the former and not the later. I've always loved that track, Personal Jesus and many others - one of the few 80 electronic bands that don't make me want to cringe when I hear them - except Speak and Spell - that one has not stood the test of time particularly well.Mac 8gb SSD Audirvana ->Weiss INT202 firewire interface ->Naim DAC & XPS2 DR->Conrad Johnson CT5 & LP70S-> Vivid B1s. I run a 2.1 system so I can't tell you if the 5.1 mix is good. My friend has heard "Love" on 5.1 and says it sounds great. Other reviewers have said the same thing.
I'm not convinced about 5.1 for music. When I watch a music DVD at my friend's place I wish that he would switch it over to 2.1 because I don't like to hear instruments or vocals coming from behind me. It just doesn't sound like any concert that I've been to. Also his front speakers are much better than his rear ones.
However, I suspect that "Love" has been properly mixed so that it sounds natural in 5.1. Can anyone comment on this?

I appreciate your help Bigburner!
Bigburner,
In my case I love 5.1 and can't watch a DVD In Stereo 2.1..Not my cup of tea.
ops:
Everyone is different, and I can see your point of view In having a more natural sounstage comming from the front, which makes sense, but I love Music comming from all sides ,and being engulfed with the Music and atmosphere. I feel as if I am sitting with the group playing on stage, when it is in 5.1. :T
for HT I have 803s for the front and 804s for the rear surround duty ,and the synergy between these 4 speakers is incredible, especially when the center is the HTM1. ;x( True Bliss for me!!!
For SACD and DVD-A and even Redbook I have ordered the 800D, for front which have not yet arrived ,and I use 802D for rear duty with HTM1D for center. Still front speakers are better than the back, but WOW in 5.1 it is amazing. My dealer has lent me the 800D until I receive my own new ones, so I know how all this will sound. I am not trying to convince you or convert you to a 5.1 enthusiast ,but I really prefer the HT and Music In 5.1, as it sounds more realistic to me ,and I feel I am part of the group and in the midst of the whole group etc.. :T In HT I cannot ever see a movie or concert In 2.1 channel ,that would defeat the whole purpose of DD and DTS and DVD-A multichannel and SACD multichannel. I guess different strokes for different folks! :W
I respect your 2.1 channel hearing ,as I sometimes do that for CD redbook playback, and for serious sessions on my own when I want to cherish an album that is not Multichannel, but when I have guest or when my wife or kids are around and for everyday listening and viewing it will be 5.1 all the way :T ;x(
Thanks bigburner for helping me out on the LOVE album to see if it is a great 5.1 surround recording ,which I presume it will be. I ordered that album anyway, so I'll find out sooner than later.
I appreciate your concern Bigburner and giving me a hand and helping me with this album and everything else. Very sweet and kind of you! I appreciate this immensly. ;x(

The Howlin' Wolf Story
This is a very good documentary about the legendary bluesman whose real name was Chester Burnett. Howlin' Wolf played blues harp and guitar but was primarily a singer. The DVD contains rare film clips (including home movies) not only of Howlin' Wolf playing and talking but also clips of numerous others musicians from his era. These clips are interspersed with interviews with people who knew Howlin' Wolf and clips of the places he lived (Memphis, Chicago) during the eras that he lived in those places. It really gave me a good feel for his environment.
Howlin' Wolf was a very organised, disciplined, sober musician. If you were in his band you worked hard and went on stage sober. After the show you could drink as much as you liked. There's one memorable scene during a jam session where he verbally chastises an elderly Son House for being drunk.
It takes hundreds of hours to put this sort of documentary together. It's such a pleasant change from the average doco which is full of interviews with has-beens who have nothing relevant to say. This is a definite buy if you're interested in the history of the blues.- Bottom

The Eagles - "Hell Freezes Over"
When people fancy watching an Eagles concert the "Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne" DVD usually gets pulled out, so it was a pleasure to watch this 1994 concert again. The Melbourne DVD is a great concert but somehow this one has more meaning as it was the first time they had played together for 14 years. Good stuff!- Bottom

It's turning into an Eagles week here.
When I got home from dinner last night I watched "Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne" while the "Hell Freezes Over" concert was still fresh in my mind. The bigger crowd in Melbourne definitely produces a higher energy performance from the band. It was interesting to see how much the guys had aged over the 10 year gap between the two concerts (the Melbourne one was in 2004). Don Henley looked quite a lot older, whereas I haven't changed at all over the last 10 years...
I''m not sure which concert I would recommend if only one DVD was allowed. The Melbourne concert probably has the edge even though the acoustic version of Hotel California on "Hell Freezes Over" is simply superb. The SQ on the Melbourne DVD is slightly superior and the 16:9 aspect on that DVD also makes it a bit more appealing.
You can't go wrong with either DVD, and both concerts are extremely wife/partner friendly. In fact my wife sat up with me 'til 1.00am and then wanted to watch the "Hell Freezes Over" DVD!- Bottom

I'm making a big effort these days to involve my wife in my music passion, and as a consequence I'm discovering CDs and DVDs that I wouldn't have tried before. A good example of this is the "James Taylor Live at the Beacon Theatre" DVD that I watched with my wife last night.
This is a wonderful, wonderful concert. I cannot remember a musician who looks as happy on stage as James Taylor. It's obvious that he just loves being there. He has a great band with him and his old songs have all been given a new treatment. My wife absolutely loved the concert and is looking forward to the next DVD. Progress!
A point of interest. Some of you will know James Taylor from Eric Clapton's "Crossroads" DVD where he performs "Steamroller Blues" with Joe Walsh. This was one of the highlights for me in a concert full of excellent material.
chinets, keep an eye out for "James Taylor Live at the Beacon Theatre". It's a lovely experience.

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)
If you are interested in popular music and you haven't seen Woodstock you should be ashamed of yourself!
This film chronicles the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Festival which was held over 3 days in Bethel, New York in 1969 and was attended by over half a million young people. The film won an Academy Award for Best Documentary.
My favourite acts are Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Ten Years After, Santana, and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Joe Cocker's performance of "A Little Help From My Friends" is the #1 live rock/pop performance ever, in my opinion. Buying the Woodstock DVD is worth it just for this one act.- Bottom

James Taylor - "Pull Over"
Buoyed by my wife's enjoyment of "James Taylor Live at the Beacon Theatre" I bought her the "Pull Over" DVD for Christmas. This DVD was recorded 3 years after the Beacon Theatre one.
We watched it last night and I was a bit disappointed. Basically it's the same band as Beacon Theatre and largely the same set list too (though there are a few good new songs too). The difference is that the band was new and fresh at Beacon Theatre whereas in Pull Over you know they've performed the same concert 200 times since Beacon Theatre. It just seemed too well rehearsed, a bit sugary, and lacking joie de vivre.
My wife liked it though and that's what counts.- Bottom

Someone gave me the Hendrix DVD for xmas... While I love Jimi Hendrix, I caught myself being distracted by the moronic bongo player behind him (who I am pretty sure is not mic'd as I could not pick him up on the audio.)
At times Jimi had to lean over and tell him to stop playing, for instance during a drum SOLO. At the end, everyone leaves the stage, and then come back for the encore, everyone except the moron, who has been replaced.
It's petty, but I don't know if I can enjoy the dvd now. I hate the bongo player.Hello, my name is Eric and I am a music addict.- Bottom

Moe. has a dvd out. It's great. I'm not of the Jam Band scene, but I have to admit that in the rock genre, Jam Bands are putting out the best quality concert dvds.
Sound is great, camera work is great. Not of the "MTV" video style where you have about 1.5 seconds of an image before it jumps to something else for .5 seconds before jumping to another camera and so on.
I would like for everyone to enjoy it.

Overall a top concert DVD with good musicians, songs, SQ and PQ.

The only lowlights were two awful songs performed by Mary Blige. How she managed to worm her way into such a great lineup is a mystery to me.- Bottom

Little Feat - "High Wire Act Live in St. Louis 2003"
I love Little Feat so naturally I was always going to enjoy this DVD, but I feel it could have been better. They have a female vocalist now (Shaun Murphy) who sings a few songs reasonably well and hangs around like a spare tyre the rest of the time. Do they really need her? I also feel that Fred Tackett (guitar) gets too much air time and doesn't deserve it.
Will I watch this DVD again? Absolutely! People who don't know Little Feat would think that it's a knockout concert, and it is. It's just that the old Little Feat set such a high standard.
Question: do any of you own the Little Feat "Rockpalast Live" DVD? I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to buy it for ages.- Bottom

This DVD has had plenty of negative reviews but I really enjoyed it. It includes many of my favourite FZ songs ("Florentine Pogen", "Inca Roads", "Cosmik Debris", "Stink Foot") and the sound quality is surprisingly good for 1974 and 1981, so what more do you need?

Luther Allison - "Live In Paradise"
This is a wonderful DVD. It is a high energy, two and a half hour concert recorded on La Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean in 1997. The PQ is pretty ordinary but the SQ is great.
Luther Allison is a Chicago blues guitarist and singer who got his first break when he was invited to play with Muddy Waters. Luther's music has wider appeal than many other blues players because he blends his blues with rock 'n' roll. There's even some driving funk mixed in there too. His backing band is top notch, particularly the bass player who sticks close to Luther for the whole concert. If you like modern music then you'll enjoy this DVD.
Luther was 57 years old when this concert was recorded. 3 months later he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died shortly afterwards. He certainly doesn't look sick in this DVD. In fact his energy is remarkable. It's a reminder to enjoy life while you can.
I found this DVD in a second hand shop for US$19. Amazon is currently selling it for US$37 so basically I have found a real gem at a bargain price! Unfortunately I bought a dud Johnny Winter DVD at the same time, but that's another story...- Bottom
