Why use a DAC?
I was looking into the DACs and was wondering why way back in the late eighties the cd was all the rage due to a totally digital reproduction/signal to reciever. Now this DAC converts it back to analogue from digital, so whats up with this going back to analogue?

Cowanrg is right, u cannot hear digital signals.
Digitizing audio provides a medium to transmit analog data source (i.e. the band at the recording studio) to desination (you, the listener) without any loss in fidelity (ideally-speaking).
Another benefit is that it is mathematically easier (and hence cheaper $$$) to convert continous (analog) signals in the discrete (digital) domain, manipulate them via DSP's, and then convert them back.Comment

So in other words, using a cd/dvd player and connecting it via a toslink/coax cable to the reciever so data is not "bad" when the reciever interpets the info to analogue? I'm guessing that an "off-board" type DAC(ie: DAC-1) does a better job of this compared to a reciever...

Well you can either:
(1) Buy a receiver that has a better DAC
(2) Buy a cd/dvd player that has a better DAC (use analog outputs)
or
(3) Buy an external DAC
If your not happy with the sound of your system then, any one of these options will likely improve sound but it ultmately depends on your ears and on your budget.Comment

From my point of view my current "preamp" is my av8801. I feed into it by using hdmi from my computer and it delivers the signals by balanced output connectors to the power amp.

"Digital" is a buzzword today, and it is regularly abused. Most "digital" cable is NOT transferring high definition digital signals, but they are transferring the 480i NTSC analog signals into digital format, so that they can compress them, to get more channels across the line. So... -
Does anyone know how the digital output acts on Classe SSPs? Specifically I realize if passes through digital signals, but if you have an analog signal going into the SSP which gets digitized will that be passed out the digital output?
