Well... weather this weekend looks garage-shop worthy! Here's hoping I get everything cut right the first time and get to slopping some glue around!

They are a lot smaller in person than I was expecting. The laminated baffle looked real good. Looking forward to hearing them some day.- Bottom

You're building a new design, with a new driver and making little 1 line posts that say things like "did stuff". Allow me to be the first to say.
Seriously tho, I'm excited to see how this thing turns out. If you get a chance take some more pics and throw em up on the way. Also if you can, bring em by when you're done. :W- Bottom

I know the feeling. I never feel like taking pictures when I've got a good head of steam and am getting a lot done. Often afterwards or the next day I'll think that I may want some memories, or someone might benefit from what I did. So I'll snap a few finished product pictures or stage some bogus in progress pics from finished stuff if possible and take em. Well when you get around to it, give us some eye candy. Some of us live vicariously through you ya know.- Bottom

Now less worthless...
Missing: tweeter back. I mis-measured that one piece, but as the tweeter isn't even as deep as the baffle it will be quite easy to remedy either way. Also missing is the back, but you can see where it should slide into place.
This is dry assembled.
Slot port, as you can probably tell. I'll probably take a quick round-over to the back corner of the port as well as probably smoothing the woofer relief a little. Chamfer on the box edges will be done after assembly (and done on the table saw or router table, NOT hand-held).

off topic, and I am sure you have post this before, but what camera and lens are you using for those low light shots?- Bottom

Canon 30D, Tamron 17-50mm/2.8 - these shot at 1/50th f5.6ish iso800. The new 7d kicks the pants off the 30D for low light, too. Must.Resist.New.Toys.

kinda... I will say that the main reason I want to get into photography is to capture retrievers in action, my other passion in life besides home theater (which I cant afford either). The deterrent is that to get a nice camera and lens to do that is on the order of 2k+.
To capture a retriever and all its drive and desire in a still is something I have dreams about! wayyyy off topic and I apologize. Maybe I will take it to PMs as I would like to get your thoughts!- Bottom

I was wondering that as well, but Jon's LBL has much wider lamination. Chris's looks like plywood laminated. Please enlighten us Chris- Bottom

Much of what may look like void is just knots in the core ply layers, from what I can tell. It's not 13 ply 18mm either, little wider. I couldn't find 13 ply that wasn't a void-fest.diVine Sound - my DIY speaker designs at diVine Audio- Bottom

only 4.5fps burst on it, and only ISO3200... Certainly workable, as just a couple years ago that would have been an awesome spec.
7d is 8fps burst, ISO12800 but a (worthwhile, IMO) solid jump in price - it's still my recommendation. For lower price I'd look at the T1i (500D) Canon: has ISO12800 but only 3.4fps burst. Both shoot 1080p also, though the 7d is required to maintain up to 30fps. With the extra ISO (it's amazingly clean, by the way - less noise at 12800 than my 30D at ISO1600) you can keep shutter speed up in crazy low light conditions.
I've never been a fan of Nikon, and that goes waaaaay back to when I was using my Canon F1's and got to play with some Nikon F2's... Realistically, they do a fine camera.

I have no doubt the 7d is excellent but its twice the money of the D90... Have to draw the line somewhere
I may have to look at the canon line-up. a local friend shoots nikon so that is all I have been looking at.- Bottom

On-topic. Going to have to haul out the table saw to do some trimming on the braces, my calculations did not properly account for the angle I think, so they're all ~1/8" too long. Which is better than too short, so I'll take it.
Originally posted by numberoneoppaOh, and if you do stretch your budget, go full frame.
D700 is really nice, even pricier than the 7d though.
I believe the Sigma 70-200/f2.8 is available for both folks that have seen the light, and folks that haven't... er, I mean, Canon and Nikon. My copy is excellent, though I'm one of a few people that could consistently tell which lens was which vs. the Canon L variant.diVine Sound - my DIY speaker designs at diVine Audio- Bottom

Thomas is going to scold us for sure for all the camera talk.
CDJ, what was your reasoning for doing the ply on its side like that? strength or aesthetics? seems like a lot of work, but I think it looks sharp.- Bottom
Comment
-
Ummmm... I knew these would need a thicker baffle and I have been getting bored with normal construction - so I got curious, thought the aesthetics would be good, figured I'd try it on a smaller project. I think I like it. Will be especially interesting once I get the die job done, but that will be a little while - measurements and crossover first.
I like things that don't try to hide how they're made - classic joinery comes to mind. While I'm not planning to dovetail my next speaker, I think that could be interesting. Ply doesn't really lend itself to that.
Also, some other projects I have in in the works will be easier to do laminated, but I needed to try the process first on something simpler.
I think it's also providing more native damping on the baffle, but that's not a scientific observation.diVine Sound - my DIY speaker designs at diVine Audio- Bottom

If you're used to working with MDF they're probably lighter than you think. Every time I heft my 43" tall birch boxes all I think to myself is "man I'm glad these aren't MDF, they're so light"- Bottom

What, me finish?! Nooooo, never.
If I can properly clean up the glue lines this will be given a die job to an adequate state of purple-ness, then clear-coated to a mild sheen, or till I get tired of finishing...

Looks very nice, definitely a lot of potential there with a bit of round over or chamfer on front or something and a neat finish. It'll probably be a very popular design. Especially over at hometheatershack where all the little exodus audio fans are going nuts waiting for a good Anarchy design.- Bottom
