    Damn kids.

john - thanks for the tips. I'll use your technique. I have another project where I might try for a mirror (or at least reasonably shiny) surface. Any tips for that?

evilskillit - I have the same fear... actually trying to decide if I want to build some floorstanders or just go massive overkill on the base for the stands to bring the center of gravity down to a safer point.

Tough call, you could give em super beefy bases and fill em with sand or concrete or something to make them hard to tip. If your kid is 3 now, hopefully within a year or two they'll get enough wherewithall to really know about their surroundings and be careful of things like tippy death speakers. Tho they'll be rambunctious and likely to knock things over for a very very long time. Heh

I still haven't decided how I'd like to do living room speakers. I think I want to either make some tall skinny floor standers with wide bases. Or just do some sort of wall mounting (blech). I'm not sure.

Hmm... forgot to mention that I have twins that turned one today in addition to the three year old. I'm just screwed I guess. Of course, three teenage girls in a few years isn't going to be much fun either.

Wall mounting was something I thought about too but yah... blech is right.

The other thing I might do is build myself a custom TV stand/entertainment center with speaker stands built in. Might be kinda funky though. Anyone seen anything that works well for us speaker folks and is well executed?

You mean DIY or commercial? I have seen some really nice DIY tv stands done. I'll see if I can search some up. I think there are a few furniture build threads in the mission accomplished section somewhere, just look around a bit. As for commercial, I'm sure there is some nice stuff out there, but its all so expensive these days

DIY. I'll check the mission accomplished section. If you come across something cool, let me know.

Don't sweat the pushed in cones. My kids did it to one of my ER18's. Seems to be ok. I'll retest it sometime before the northern CA diy...

I hung my SR-71s from the ceiling. I used plumbing pipe and joints for adjustments. they sound great. better than my ascend acoustics CMT-340SE.

Now that is an interesting idea. I'm sure you've done something different than what I'm imagining and I'd like to see pics, but what I imagine is a pipe flange in the ceiling, 5 feet of pipe coming straight down, attached to another flange attached to the top of the speaker so that they're just floating in air at stand height . Little kids could run right under em, they better watch their noggins as they get taller tho. Heh

evilskillit is such a cool name I always get a kick out of it when I see it. yes that is about how they are. I think I have pics here or on my sub build at the shack. that way you can paint them the same color as the ceiling. also I have 9ft ceilings. and my wife pushes the furniture around different ways every month for some reason.

I've only done a mirror finish on very small pieces (1 inch square). I don't have buffers, etc, so it's all manual, and very time consuming. The only reason I did a mirror finish was for an ultra-flat optical measurement (I used machining, then a little hand polishing, then lapping by hand with precision lapping surfaces). I don't have the patience for making a mirror finish just for looks. You're going to have experiment with some scrap, and have a lot of free time.

^ Forget that! New idea... I might try to inlay some thin strips of Mahogany (scrap from the speakers) into a new amp front panel I'm building. I can mill out a little groove with my mini mill. The corners will be round is the only issue. I guess I can round over the wood just by sanding them down a bit. Might be hard to get it perfect, but a little trial and error should get me close enough. Now, just to decide on the shape and size. The only other thing on the front panel will be some handles and the on/off switch.

I'm planning to have SR71 Zaph kits all around (left, right, surround channels). The center channel will be placed on an Omnimount rack above the 65" Mits DLP TV (max load = 30lbs). I may want to build it with 5/8" thick wood (with good bracing of course) to keep it light as 30lbs isn't...

I've posted this on another forum but thought i would post here as well since John is known to post on this forum.

I've built the cabinets with the exception of the baffles and the kit from Madisound will be here tomorrow.

                          Some pics of the cabs.

                          by gornir
                          Hi everyone,

I have written a small review on the Zaph Audio ZA-SR71 loudspeaker design. The ZA-SR71 is a popular and a well-regarded design among the DIY community and rightfully so.

The ZA-SR71 is both technically well-designed and a good performer sonically, paired with...
