Normally, we use MDF and ply because it is more resistant to movement due to moisture and temperature change. Engineered wood is also less resonant. But, enough people have done all solid wood and made it work. But, then again a few have had them crack.
Butt joints are strong enough with MDF and ply. I believe that real wood is obviously different. Glueing end grain to face of real wood doesn't work well - especially with the denser woods like mahogany. So, if you're using real wood then rabbets might be advisable.

The Microbes deserve better. But we all have to start somewhere, and you're starting off a lot better than I did.
