Steve,
Do you think if I hung one of your socks over my fireplace at christmas Santa would fill it with a sub?

lol...Wouldn't that be something! Dream come true hu? I doubt it though, since you have a dual driver enclosure on your list he'll most likely opt to stuff your stocking with candy and a few tangerine's. :BSteve,Do you think if I hung one of your socks over my fireplace at christmas Santa would fill it with a sub?
I'm not sure what you call it. It's thicker than normal speaker fabric but by no means as thick as carpet. I need to pick some more up at the fabric store and I'll be sure to find out for you. I want to see if I can find it on-line anyway. One of my BETA's tells me he can see the blue wording under the sock in the pic? I just don't get that since I, my wife, or two daughters cant see anything in person.. even when pulled more taught? I'm talking in the sunlight to. The sono lines will show up when pulled tight, so I'll do a extra layer of some other black material under the sock as a safe guard. That sock looks really nice. What kind of fabric is it?- Bottom

Hold it Mike! If I'm wrong I'm wrong. All be darned if I can see it in person though, but upon looking at this pic more closely in the sunlight, I can definitely see the logo in this one.
ops: For any that would step in, this is not a finished DIY project. The underside of the top cap still needs painting along with getting the sock squared away.

Thanks Mike. I really do like the sound and hope you will to??Regardless, it still looks like a mighty damn fine sub to me!
I cant argue with you there Ryan... I really liked that stripe. I better because it took enough time!I think the box with the racing strip was sexier.
Hey have you or anyone else seen (The Fast and the Furious III)yet. I just got back from trying to rent it, but it was all checked out. I wound up with a couple others to hold me over though.- Bottom

Well it looks like this Thread sort of got jump started again except a different sub...ok. Nick are you referring to the subs that I have built or the subs I have bought? Something you might or might not know is I have actually ran a few cylinders in the past. Those being three 25-31CS+'s, a 20-39PC Ultra and the custom tuned (22 Hz) 25-31PCi which still resides in the den...the ISD driver has been replaced with the NSD. So I've been a fan of the cylinder along with the box style. They both have there pros and con's and one's room, estedicts or just plane preference will dictate whats best.SteveNN I knew you would come around to a sonotube sub movement. Hehe Those look great by the way, care to comment on the sq compared to all the other appliciations you have tried? :B
You know I went out and bought six pair of cheap reading glasses this last year so they would be all over the place. I think maybe it's time to get my eyes checked out. For the life of me I can only see the lettering in the last pic I posted. I'll take your word for it though and do whats necessary to make sure the finale outcome doesn't suffer from to thin of a sock.Yeah....I can see the lettering in both pictures. Hmm, I'm guessing that material has some cotton in it?
I thought of that Dennis, but it wont address the pantie lines when pulled taught. The feeling of a thicker sock will be better anyway don't you think? I'm kind of leaving myself open with that last question, but I think you know what I mean.See-through is why some people paint their tubes black before the put a sock on.

But, to smooth out the spiral ripples, assuming you're using a thin sock, you could always trowel on some drywall mud and sand it -- a few strokes with coarse sandpaper. Or use a thicker sock. Or you could just say screw it, nobody but anal-retentive forum-types will ever notice. Personally I think it looks fine the way it is.

Thanks and yes I do to, but then I'm the builder not the buyer. Hey I know what I'll dooo..I'll wrap that sucker with some R13, spray it black and call it good, the heck with the sock! 8)Or you could just say screw it, nobody but anal-retentive forum-types will ever notice. Personally I think it looks fine the way it is.
Very astute! That's why I cant see it, it's the flash! Good thinking. You know I ordered some 10" grills for the ports, but I hate to cover any of the gloss black. I think I'll leave mine open. If I was still a drinker, a guy could hide a 5th down one of these ports with room to still perform.but that might be due to the flash more than anything.

Isn't that the truth Chuck..lol Gratitude comes to mind.Ya know, Steve, only a guy like us would come up with that.
No question about it. The two sealed units had a slight harshness to the bass in certain passages along with the dual driver unit exhibiting the same behaviour. It didn't come up very often, (never with music) but none the same I knew it was there lurking in the background waiting to raise it's ugly head. What to attribute it to I don't know, there are so many variables. Anyway I now know for certain it's not a characteristic of the driver after building the sono's. The 7.5 cu ft ported unit I built didn't exhibit this, but it was a little higher tuned and needed a little more management from getting out of hand. The sono comes across as smooth (not a hint of harshness) and the best SQ wise as far as manners go on all fronts.I was referring to the the subs built with the RLP-15, is it true you prefer the sono for sq?- Bottom

Steve thanks for the comments. When you say you perfer the sono application does include the sealed? I think I perferred the sealed cabinet for music over ported slightly. But the output of the ported far outweights any slight advantage if any. I suspect that if I treated my room the sono would not be giveing up anything. Look forward to hearing your impressions of sono against the sealed. By the way you have always had me mixed up with someone else as far as the svs purchase. You did help me get into diy with my first rlp in sealed cabinet. Many thanks! :BOriginally posted by steve nnIsn't that the truth Chuck..lol Gratitude comes to mind.

I played around with a few different cloths. It was only direct light from a lamp (or a flash!) that allowed me to see the lettering underneath.Originally posted by steve nnVery astute! That's why I cant see it, it's the flash! Good thinking.
In the end, I went with a somewhat thicker cloth. Something like 92% cotton and 8% lycra. Can't see the lettering at all. Even the twirls of the tube are a little though to see. And for me, if it looks more confortable to touch, it will seem nicer. Like cotton somehow looks better than polyester. (Yes, I grew up in the 1970's.)

They come in at right next to 300 liters with 260 effective. I'm not sure on tune yet..very close to 15 Hz.. I'll be nailing that down in the next week though. If all goes well, there should be a first Thread in the next 3-4 weeks I would think.Steve, What is the volume and tune for your new subs?
Also, is there a thread some where that you are discussing all this, or is it just in PM space?
I would say that pretty much sums it up concerning my thoughts. It is very close and like you say, HT really puts it ahead since I'm basically 99% HT in the main.Steve thanks for the comments. When you say you perfer the sono application does include the sealed? I think I perferred the sealed cabinet for music over ported slightly.
I'll remember now that I asked you on the Forum. It's like putting someone else's name with a name to jog the memory. Sorry about that, but please consider it (the thought) dislodged. :TBy the way you have always had me mixed up with someone else as far as the svs purchase. Yip, that's what I need to do or go with some type of rug material? I just came back in from putting two socks on one unit and what a pain in the rump. The diameter of the inner caps are to large now and they're not easy to square away after their all glued, painted up and put together. This has been one long learning process I tell you. I dry fitted every thing, but I didn't take into account the double layer. One cap was so tight in getting it off it actually split the inner baffle. There's knowing and learning and then there's knowing and learning. :WIn the end, I went with a somewhat thicker cloth. Something like 92% cotton and 8% lycra. Can't see the lettering at all. I totally understand. My sub was my first DIY adventure. I was so concerned about getting a good seal of the caps to the tube that mine are way too tight. Myself and a friend (300 lbs. total) hung from the top cap to jam it down. And it never got all the way in. So it's not sitting flush on the tube. You can even see a little bulge in the tube where it's got the caps stuck in. I don't think there's any way to get either end cap off now. If I ever need to move or take it apart for any reason, I think I have no choice but to cut right through the sock and tube, to get at the caps. Then replace the tube, cap, and batting. Sub #2 would go a little more smoothly, but I don't have any need for another. For my Modula MT project, I'm building one speaker all the way through. Then using that experience to improve the design and my methods for speakers 2 and 3. I need 3 speakers anyways. 2 and 3 are definitely coming out a little prettier. But it's all great fun.Originally posted by steve nnThis has been one long learning process I tell you. I dry fitted every thing, but I didn't take into account the double layer. Yeah that's one tight fit! :E Prior to the sono experience I had hi doubts one could get such a tight fit but I (we) now know different now.For my Modula MT project, I'm building one speaker all the way through. I like your aproach and the way your going about it. There is a lot to be said for taking your time and getting it right. When I build my next three, I'll be going about things differently in the process and a slight design change. Even though I have the proto (it's been a big help) I can still think of more ways to change my aproach/plan of attack in the future. These sono's are a bugger, much harder than building a box style as far as I'm concerned. I mean we're talking all router work with making it all fit together like a puzzle. Not that a box isn't a puzzle, but the table saw and trim bit go along ways at a fast clip.. I would equate it with something like a 500 piece puzzle versus a 750.

This is why the community of the internet is so great. The early builders are pioneers; the rest of us learn from your..experiences.Originally posted by JonW. Sub #2 would go a little more smoothly, but I don't have any need for another.
This always happens to me. Well, I've made 2 sets of speakers, and each time I have one good one and one I choose not to use while showing them off.Originally posted by JonW

Stevenn.....so give me some feedback buddy....how are the subs after a few days of listening? any pros/cons?
also, I thought you made only two of them, but looks like there were 3 sonos....sorry if I missed something.

I'm not sure if your talking about the dual driver box design or the dual sono's...but if you are talking about the dual driver in the box at 21 cubes?.. no I don't think I would do it again. The bass was fine (a little harsh on a few passages, never music) but it was just to much sub to move around. It was fun to build no doubt about it, but dang!..to impractical considering my dingbat ways of playing with so many subs and the desire to build more. One thing is for certain though, I have had no other dual driver sub that would come close to putting out what that LLT brute could muster. All in all, it was pretty behaved..I'll give it a 8.50 on SQ and ohhhhh 9.99 on SPL and headroom. :Pso now that youve been able to live with this dual rlp for a while what are your overall impressions? would you do it again? or go in another direction?
Heck Shervie! I been running the LLT sono for quite some time now. Trust me I understandStevenn.....so give me some feedback buddy....how are the subs after a few days of listening? any pros/cons? also, I thought you made only two of them, but looks like there were 3 sonos....sorry if I missed something.

One of the sono's I sold and the other is mine. There should be a Thread coming up on the one I sold I would imagine.
One is more than plenty for my purposes though. Now the sono comes in 4dB less than the dual driver rig, but still very impressive in all regards. I would give it (single sono) a 9.80 on SQ and 9.65 on SPL and headroom considering it's a single driver unit. Two of them would be absolutely menacing with the bass coming in better than what I have ever experienced. I have no doubt that the sono is the best SQ wise I have built or bought to date, it's really that nice.
Oh! no that third sub you saw in a pic somewhere was most likely a PCi I still have from back in the day. Would you believe out of all the SVS subs I have had, it's the 22 Hz tuned PCi that hung on? 8)
I bet this passed you by also then Sherv? This was just for some Friday afternoon fun out in the garage. It took about 4 1/2 hrs to build. It's a ISD driver that's been laying around...I refer to it as Quick Sub!

nice! wow, so of all the different configs you've built/listened, this puppy has the best SQ? :E that says a lot!! cool.Heck Shervi....One is more than plenty for my purposes though. I personally still think the dual sealed 15" tumult with Bassis/QSC1450 had the best SQ I've listened to, with my sub and chuck's sub a close 2nd, followed by the rest of the bunch at a distance...........obviously not counting IB, as that is in a league of its own! :B
No man....I'm talking about this pic:
Seems like you were gonna (or did build) three of them...oh well, but I get it now...2 of them!
No, I saw that....the afternoon job! hehehe.....that was impressive too. I told you then, and I'll tell you again: you need professional help my friend! and plus, if you are truly bored, we got plenty of work down here with Chuck...those mamoth sonos aint gonna be that easy to build, but at least you get to enjoy the weather a little, and listen to a pair of ultimate LLTs :T- Bottom
